The Miners filled the break in the championship with a training game
On Friday, March 15, the UPL leaders Shakhtar held a friendly against the First League leaders Karpaty at the Ukraina stadium in Lviv.
The match began immediately with the home team's goal: already in the 1st minute, the Lions managed to attack down the right flank, the ball was delivered to the centre of the penalty area where Kostenko shot into the bottom corner. However, in the 13th minute, the Orange-and-Blacks equalized: Viktor Tsukanov cut the defence of the Lviv-based side in a quick attack, providing a wonderful assist to Traore, who made it 1-1. From that moment, the Miners completely retake the initiative in the game, and soon Kelsy scored, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. However, Marino Pusic’s lads continued to move forward and got their way in the 34th minute: Lassina Traore passed to Newertton during the counter-attack, the Brazilian returned the ball through the cross, with the Burkinian forward scoring from the box and securing a brace – 1-2. After that, the hosts became more active and threatened several times near Artur Rudko's goal in the time left before the break, but they failed to score a second time.
At the start of the second half, Shakhtar made a triple substitution: Denys Tvardovskyi, Irakli Azarov and Kevin appeared on the field. The teams continued to keep a high pace, but for the most part, all events were reduced to challenges in the midfield, and there were almost no scoring opportunities. The Miners tried to play fluidly in their style in the opposing half, but without any significant approach towards the goal. But the Lviv outfit converted their almost first chance: Buleza fell in the penalty area in a challenge against Pedrinho, the referee awarded a penalty which was converted by Arielson in the 76th minute. Soon the hosts had a chance to take the lead, but Tvardovskyi saved after Buleza's attempt into the far corner, and Miroshi prevented two opponents from finishing. In the last minutes, the Pitmen also had a chance when Newertton's cross down the middle was intercepted by the goalkeeper.
