Shakhtar women's team faced Vorskla away in the first round of the second stage of the Vyshcha League

Head coach of Shakhtar women’s team Roman Zaiev released the following starting line-up for the first official match of 2024: Klimova acted in the goal, Mokhnach and Mostova played on the defensive wings, Krevska, Henyk and Lutsan appeared in the centre of defence, Starukhina and Zaborovets acted in the middle of the field, Yanieva and Vykaliuk appeared on the wings, and Molodiuk had a central forward position.

The match started with a 30-minute delay due to air raid alert in Ukraine.

Penalty at the start

Vorskla took a high pace from the start and attacked the gate of the visiting team, which led to a quick goal: Klimova, after a corner, turned the ball to the right corner of the penalty area, where Mostova knocked down Kotyk in a struggle, for which the referee awarded a penalty kick, which was converted by Podolska with a shot into the left bottom corner. Not even 10 minutes had passed, when an air raid alarm was announced in Poltava, which lasted 50 minutes. After the game was resumed, the opponents started to fight for the initiative, but the Miners were the first to create a goal-scoring opportunity, when Vykaliuk won the fight with the body, dribbled the ball through the wing and passed it to Mokhnach for the run, the latter then made a cross to Starukhina for a shot – the crossbar. Poltava team responded by Petryk’s shot – Klimova blocked it. In the 29th minute, Kozlova ran into the penalty area and was knocked down after an unsuccessful play off the line by Klimova, for which the referee awarded a spot-kick, which Nikol converted, for the second time during the meeting. Mokhnach had a great chance to reduce the gap when she attempted a long-range shot under the crossbar, but at the last moment, the goalkeeper turned the ball for a corner, after which Henyk made a dangerous shot. In the 34th minute, the host team converted another opportunity, when Kalinina broke free after a splitting pass and made a cross to Kravchuk for a shot. Before the break, the pace of the game decreased a bit and the ball was mainly in the central part of the field.

Lack of goal-scoring opportunities

The second half began with a 15-minute delay due to the announced air raid alert in the Poltava region. The opponents started with mutual struggle in every area of the field. Shakhtar tried to move the ball forward to the last third of the field, using medium passes and wing runs. But Vorskla started pressing high and pushed the Orange-and-Blacks to their own goal. Zinchenko’s team did not force events and combined, looking for space in the defence of the visiting team. Thus, in the 71st minute, Kalinina put Kozlova in a shooting position with a splitting pass, but she failed to adjust to the shot. A minute later, Korsun shot from outside the penalty area – Klimova turned it for a corner while falling. Later, Kotiash had a chance to score after a set-play attack, but the ball hit the woodwork after a deflection, and the Miners were the first to pursue rebounds. Until the end of the meeting, the teams took turns possessing the ball, but they did not manage to create a real threat to each other.

Shakhtar women’s team will host Kolos in Shchaslyve in the next round on March 27.
