Ukraine hosted Iceland in Wroclaw in the final of the European Championship qualifying play-offs

Head coach of the Blue-and-Yellows Serhii Rebrov gave three Shakhtar players a place in the starting line-up for the decisive game: Mykola Matviienko was in the centre of the defence with the captain’s armband, Yukhym Konoplia played on the right defensive wing, and Heorhii Sudakov appeared in the centre of the field.

The Ukrainians started the match actively, and Sudakov made the first shot – the ball went above the target after his shot from outside the penalty area. The Icelanders also responded with a long-range attempt – Thorsteinsson hit the target, but Lunin saved his shot. The nominal host team created a good opportunity in the 15th minute: Mykolenko shot on the volley after a wing cross from Konoplia – near the post. Towards the middle of the half, the game seemed to slow down and turn into a positional battle in the middle of the field, but that is when Iceland took their chance and opened the scoring: in the 30th minute, Gudmundsson hit the right corner from the semi-circle line. Sudakov had a chance to equalise the score, when he beat several opponents, broke into the penalty area and powerfully shot into the near corner – Valdimarsson turned his shot for a corner not without difficulty. In the 39th minute, the Ukrainians even managed to score, when Yaremchuk scored after Sudakov’s cross and Tsyhankov’s throw-in, but the VAR referee disallowed the goal due to offside.

From the beginning of the second half of the match, the Blue-and-Yellows went forward with all their might, and the main leader of the Ukrainians’ attacks was Heorhii Sudakov. And in the 53rd minute he led Viktor Tsyhankov to the goal with a smart pass to the right wing, the latter moved to the centre and put the ball under the left post – 1-1. Serhii Rebrov’s team continued to play as leaders, and soon Yaremchuk had the opportunity to give our national team a lead, but he hit the net from the outside from the goalmouth corner. Sudakov shot dangerously from the penalty area – the goalkeeper pulled the ball out from under the crossbar. Soon, Andrii Lunin made a similar save, blocking a difficult shot by Thorsteinsson, and in the next episode, the inaccuracy of Gudmundsson, who missed the target from advantageous position, saved the team. And yet the Ukrainians managed to score a decisive winning goal: in the 84th minute, Tsyhankov passed from the right wing to Sudakov, and Heorhii rolled the ball for a shot to Mykhailo Mudryk, who hit the far corner from the penalty area line.

2-1 – Ukraine national team claimed a comeback victory over Iceland national team and qualified for Euro!

The 2024 European Championship will take place from June 14 to July 14 this year in Germany. The opponents of Ukraine national team in Group E will be Belgium, Slovakia and Romania.
