Donetsk team played their first official match exactly 88 years ago

Beginning of the history and first achievements

On May 24, 1936, Stakhanovets played the first game of the championship, facing Dynamo Kazan in the away match. The team was put together and led by coach Mykola Naumov, and the first goal in the history of the Miners was scored by Fedir Manov. In 1946, Donetsk team got its current name – Shakhtar.

The Miners won their first trophies under the guidance of coach Oleh Oshenkov – Shakhtar won the USSR Cup in 1961 and 1962. In 1975, the team won silver awards of the championship, and made its debut in the European Cups in the autumn of 1976. In 1980 and 1983, Shakhtar won the USSR Cup twice under the guidance of head coach Viktor Nosov, and won the USSR Super Cup in 1984.

Most decorated club in Ukraine

The first achievement since independence was victory in the 1994/95 Ukrainian Cup. In October 1996, Rinat Akhmetov became FC Shakhtar president – it marks the beginning of the modern and most successful era in the history of the club. During this time, the team became the champion of Ukraine 15 times, won another 13 domestic Cups and 9 Super Cups, and won the UEFA Cup. Today, Shakhtar has 39 trophies and is the most decorated club since Ukraine’s independence.

Main figures and records of the club

Throughout history, Shakhtar has had 37 head coaches – from Mykola Naumov to Marino Pusic. The most successful head coach is still Mircea Lucescu, who won 22 trophies with the team during 12 years (2004–2016). The Romanian specialist also holds the record for the number of games at the head of Shakhtar – 573.

But the record holder among the players is the legendary captain of the Miners and now the Sporting Director of the club Darijo Srna – he played 536 matches for Shakhtar from 2003 to 2018. Next on the list of the main guards of the team are Mykhailo Sokolovskyi (485 appearances) and Andrii Piatov (480 appearances). Among the current players, Taras Stepanenko (424) and Yaroslav Rakitskyi (374) are the closest to the top by this indicator.

The best goalscorer in the entire history of Shakhtar is Brazilian forward Luiz Adriano who played for the Orange-and-Blacks in 2007–2015 and scored 128 goals. The mark of one hundred goals was also surpassed by Andrii Vorobei (114), Vitalii Starukhin (110) and Mykhailo Sokolovskyi (105).
