Shakhtar hosted Zorya in Lviv in the UPL round 13

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic once again applied squad rotation compared to the team’s previous games: Vinicius Tobias and Azarov appeared on the defensive wings this time, Marlon Gomes acted next to Bondarenko and Sudakov in the centre of the field, Pedrinho and Kevin were the wingers.

Yevheniia and Mariia, the wife and daughter of the fallen defender of Ukraine Ivan Pavlichenko, took the first symbolic kick. Ivan was a combat medic, a junior sergeant of the 131st Separate Battalion of the 112th Territorial Defence Brigade and the brother of FC Shakhtar employee Artem Pavlichenko. On August 30, 2024, Ivan was killed in action in the Kupiansk-bound direction, providing the necessary aid to the wounded brother-in-arms. Before his death, Ivan managed to save the life of a fellow soldier, but he came under enemy fire while waiting for evacuation. His wife Yevheniia and daughter Mariia took the first kick in memory of Ivan and his heroic deed.

Game advantage of the Pitmen, but the visiting team scored

The teams started the meeting rather cautiously and slowly: as expected, the Miners had more possession and were the first to create a dangerous moment – Sudakov headed the ball over the crossbar after Kevin’s cross to the goal-area line. Then Irakli Azarov did not catch another sharp cross from the Brazilian. In the middle of the half, the Georgian defender was injured and replaced by Pedro Henrique. And in the 37th minute, the visiting team unexpectedly opened the scoring – Yatsyk hit the top corner with a powerful shot from the left corner of the penalty area. The Pitmen had several chances to equalise the score before the break: the shots by Sikan and Matviienko from the penalty area were saved by Turbaievskyi, and Danylo shot past the goalkeeper in another episode, but the ball was cleared by the Luhansk team defender. Kevin also made a long-range shot into the goalkeeper’s hands, and Sudakov kicked the ball near the post.

Quick comeback with the goals by Bondarenko and Kevin

From the beginning of the second half of the match Shakhtar players pressed the opponents to their goal and quickly turned the game around. In the 52nd minute, the host team equalised the score: Artem Bondarenko earned the spot-kick and converted it himself with a shot under the post – 1-1. And the Orange-and-Blacks took the lead two minutes later: Vinicius Tobias shot into the centre of the penalty area from the right wing, Kevin stopped the ball and put it into the right corner – 2-1. Marino Pusic’s team continued to control the events on the field and be closer to another goal. Kevin’s shot after Bondarenko’s pass was covered by Turbaievskyi, and then the goalkeeper of the Luhansk-based side also saved the team after the kick by Vinicius Tobias almost from the goal-area line. The coaching staff of the Pitmen slightly refreshed the attacking line with a series of substitutions, fielding Kryskiv and Zubkov first, with Eguinaldo and Traore appearing later. The visiting team tried to make a final attack in the last minutes, but the Miners calmly stopped the opponent with coordinated and clear actions, and they set the final score in the added time, when Jordan turned Zubkov’s wing cross into his own net.

3-1 – Shakhtar claimed a comeback victory over Zorya.

Now club football is going on a two-week international break. The Miners will play their next UPL game away against Inhulets on November 23.
