Shakhtar faced PSV away in the UEFA Champions League league phase MD 5 game

Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for the match against the champions of the Netherlands: Riznyk played in the goal, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique appeared on the defensive wings, Matviienko and Bondar played in the centre of defence, Kryskiv, Bondarenko and Sudakov acted in the midfield from the first minutes, Zubkov and Kevin were the wingers, and Sikan played at the helm.

Confident play and goals by Sikan and Zubkov after Konoplia’s assists

The opponents started the match with counterattacks, and if the host team created the first moment in the match (Riznyk saved Bakayoko’s shot from the penalty area), then the champions of Ukraine managed to open the scoring in the 8th minute: Riznyk threw the ball to the halfway line to Konoplia, the latter played with Zubkov and made a very convenient cross to the centre of the penalty area, and Danylo Sikan hit the left corner with a one-touch shot in a fight with the opponent – 0-1. Soon after that, the Pitmen had a chance to widen their lead, but Kryskiv shot in centimetres from the right post from the semi-circle. In the middle of the half, the Eindhoven-based side became more active, and Dmytro Riznyk had to show his skills – the goalkeeper of the Orange-and-Blacks saved dangerous shots by Lang, Saibari and Bakayoko one by one. And in the 37th minute, the Miners launched a quick attack, and this time they managed to double the score: Konoplia dispossessed the opponent of the ball in the rival’s half of the field and passed to the right corner of the penalty area to Oleksandr Zubkov, who outplayed the defender and curled a strike under the far post – 0-2. And shortly before the break, the Ukrainians almost secured a crushing victory when Matviienko headed the ball from the goal-area line, but the it went over the crossbar.

Tragedy of the last minutes

At the start of the second half of the match, PSV tried to press, but the defence of the Pitmen acted in an organized manner and kept the opponent away from the shooting positions. Moreover, in the 50th minute, the Eindhoven-based team could have remained in the minority, but the referee did not react to Tillman’s direct kick to Sikan’s knee for some reason. After this foul, the Ukrainian forward had to leave the field, Eguinaldo replaced him. Marino Pusic’s team responded with two moments: first, Pedro Henrique shot on the volley from a radius – next to the left post, and then the defender of the host team turned Konoplia’s shot from the penalty area for a corner. And in the 69th minute, Shakhtar player was sent off: Pedro Henrique received a straight red card for a foul identical to a foul of Eindhoven team player Tillman. The coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks reacted to that with a substitution, fielding Bartol Franjic. In a few minutes, Riznyk made a fantastic save, managing Bakayoko’s shot into the left top corner in a jump. In the final stretch of the game, the Dutch team attacked the goal of the Ukrainians, and Riznyk saved the dangerous shots by Pepi and Til, but in the 87th minute, the host team managed to score – Tillman unexpectedly shot into the near corner from the penalty area, and the ball crossed the goal line by centimetres. And in the 90th minute, Tillman hit the top corner with a powerful kick from outside the penalty area and equalised the score. And no matter how the Miners fought, defending their goal, Pepi took advantage of the chaos in the penalty area in the last added minute and scored the third goal. 2-3 – Shakhtar lost to PSV in the minority.

The Miners will play their next Champions League match against Bayern in Gelsenkirchen on December 10. The meeting at the Arena AufSchalke will kick off at 22:00 Kyiv time.

And on Sunday, December 1, Marino Pusic’s team will play a scheduled UPL match against Rukh at the Arena Lviv at 18:00.
