History and path to the UCL

PSV, or Philips Sport Vereniging (Philips Sports Association), is a club founded in 1913 in Eindhoven. It has played in the top division of Dutch football, the Eredivisie, since the league was established in 1956. PSV is one of the most successful clubs in its country: 25 league titles, 11 national cups and 14 Super Cups, triumphs in the European Cup (1988) and the UEFA Cup (1978). In the 2023/24 season, the Red-and-Whites won the Eredivisie gold medals, securing 29 wins in 34 matches (91 points, goal difference: 111-21), and directly qualified for the Champions League league phase.

Start of the 2024/25 season

PSV started the new championship just as strongly – after 13 rounds, the Farmers have 12 wins and one loss, leading the Eredivisie standings with 36 points. The team’s performance is also noteworthy – 45 goals scored and only 9 conceded. In the last match, PSV defeated Groningen (5-0) at home through a hat-trick from 21-year-old American forward Ricardo Pepi and goals from Boscagli and Til. In the Champions League, PSV started with an away loss to Italian side Juventus (1-3), then tied with Portuguese Sporting (1-1) and the French PSG (1-1). They secured their first win in the last round, defeating Spanish Girona (4-0). Therefore, the Dutch champions have 5 points (goal difference: 7-5) and are in 24th spot in the Champions League standings after 4 rounds.

Squad and leaders

The creator of PSV's modern successes is considered to be head coach Peter Bosz, a 61-year-old specialist known for his work with Ajax, German Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, along with French Lyon. He took over the Eindhoven-based side in the summer of 2023 and led them to the title in their first season. The captain and leader of the team is 34-year-old striker Luuk de Jong, who is the most prolific player of the Red-and-Whites this season according to the goal + pass system (8 goals scored and 4 assists). Also among the top scorers are Ricardo Pepi (9 goals), Malik Tillman (6 goals and 4 assists) and Guus Til (5 goals and 5 assists). The team's most expensive player, according to the Transfermarkt, is Belgian forward Johan Bakayoko (transfer value is EUR 45 million).

Stadium

PSV's home ground is the PSV Stadion (Philips Stadium) with a capacity of around 35,000. Built in 1913, the stadium hosted matches during Euro 2000 and the 2006 UEFA Cup final. It is located in the Philipsdorp district near the centre of Eindhoven and has a four-star status according to UEFA.
