Shakhtar U19 faced PSV U19 in the UEFA Youth League MD 5 game in Eindhoven

The coaching staff of Shakhtar U19 chose the following starting line-up for the match against PSV U19: Bahlai played in the goal, Bashmarin and Kostiuk appeared in the centre of defence, Oharkov and Drozd acted on the defensive wings, Davydenko, Smetana and Tsukanov played in the midfield, Strilchuk and Tiutiunov were the wingers, Lomaha had a central forward position.

Defensive play

The starting stretch passed with the host team having the game initiative, they combined and tried to get to Bahlai’s goal. Instead, the Miners focused on defensive play and quick counterattacks. Bawuah was especially active in the Dutch team, he shot from outside the penalty area several times, but Bahlai reacted to all kicks calmly. In the 24th minute, the Einhoven-based side managed to hit the goal, when van Duiven turned the cross right home with the header, but the Pitmen held the offside line, and the goal was disallowed due to offside position. The Miners successfully blocked further attempts of the host team to intensify the game, and they tried to attack the opponent’s goal at the end of the half. However, it did not lead to dangerous moments, the teams left for a break with a goalless draw.

Drozd’s spectacular shot brought a draw

The second half started with the exchange of the goal-scoring chances. The Orange-and-Blacks had the first opportunity to score when Tiutiunov’s shot was saved by Smolenaars, and the fast counterattack ended with van Duiven’s shot over the crossbar. In the next episode, van Duiven was knocked down near the penalty area, after which the referee awarded a set piece, and when the ball hit the arm of Shakhtar U19 player in the penalty area, the referee awarded a penalty, which van Duiven converted successfully. The coaching staff of Shakhtar U19 quickly reacted to the course of events with a double substitution: Kaliuzhnyi and Petruk replaced Lomaha and Strilchuk on the field. After that, the Miners began to act with more courage, using space for attacks, and achieved their goal in the 76th minute, when Drozd took advantage of the mistake of PSV U19 goalkeeper and took a corner with a short from a half-turn – 1-1. Towards the end of the match, the pace of the game only increased, which led to mutual fouls and nervousness. After another clash between the players and dissatisfaction with the referee’s reaction, head coach of Shakhtar U19 Oleksii Bielik received a second booking. In the added time, the host team possessed the ball and tried to take the lead, threatening mainly through wing crosses. However, coordinated actions in defence and confident play of Bahlai prevented the Dutch team from reaching their goal.

1-1 – Shakhtar U19 shared points with Dutch PSV U19 in the away match and secured a place in the play-offs early.
