Press conference of head coach of PSV Peter Bosz after the Champions League match against Shakhtar

– Very good football, but not our best day. Indeed, it was a spectacular victory, similar to the one in the match against Sevilla, but we began very badly and defended poorly from the start, continuing to play like that despite the fact that there were enough opportunities. There was no aggression, and of course we played against a good team. Shakhtar are a great team, but we did not show our good side in the first half. In the second half we looked somewhat better, but were losing 0-2, and this is an unpleasant result, also we could not score.

– PSV managed to score three goals in eight minutes. Were you hoping for such a result?
– Of course, I was hoping, and recently we managed to score against Feyenoord at the end as well. I think that in the second half my players showed themselves better, showed the required energy and aggression. The red card was fair in my opinion, he did not do it on purpose, but the red card was fair, which contributed to the extra energy on the field. Later we replaced Olivier, and, fortunately, we won. It does not matter, even if we lost 0-2 or 0-3 in the end, we showed good game.

– You recalled the game against Sevilla.
– It was a year ago, and it was also our 5th round of the Champions League. Of course, we compared these matches, because the energy after scored goals helped us a lot. Both in the game against Sevilla and against Shakhtar, the players who came on as substitutes helped us win. During the match against Shakhtar I was hoping for at least one goal, but three…it is very good.

– What was the game against Shakhtar like for you personally?
– Of course, if you are losing 0-2 and then get such a result… To be honest, I did not even count on that. I spoke with Marino Pusic after the game, and he has a somewhat different perspective on this meeting and his team. I emphasised that his players showed a decent game and made the match very difficult for us, and the red card helped us, although it had a very negative effect for them. Our style of play was good, and in such matches it is necessary to play at a high level, but there was not enough intensity, especially in the first half. Yes, the second half was very good, you saw how Olivier and Matteo defended, but intensity from the halfbacks is also needed. And if it is absent, we are behind.

– Will you go home satisfied after the game?
– When we played against Sporting I thought that we deserved to win, and then the match was really good. But I am not satisfied with the game against Shakhtar, although we won.

– You said before that de Jong and Ricardo Pepi do not play together.
– I said that because they did not practise enough to play together. It is necessary to prepare well for that. Pepi started the second half of the match in one position, and later moved to another, and we had to do it because we were 0-2 behind, although the players had not practised these options before. Compared to the match in Spain, I want to emphasise that the sending-off was a very significant episode. It happens often, and we also had situations where we remained in the minority and had to keep playing. I was hoping for at least a draw but we managed to score another goal – it is great.

– Could you even believe it?
– No! I do not even remember how I reacted, and I did not know who scored the third goal, they told me about it later. As a coach you have to pay attention to many different aspects, so it may not seem quite right, but on the pitch I think about many things at the same time.

– It is not the first time you have mentioned intensity. What can you say about the upcoming matches?
– As for the games against Girona or Groningen, we showed intensity in those matches. However, it must be present every minute, on every part of the pitch, at the right moment. Players are capable of doing that, but they have to work on it in every match.
