Shakhtar hosted Young Boys in Gelsenkirchen in the UEFA Champions League league phase MD 4

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic fielded the following line-up for this match: Riznyk played in the goal, Matviienko and Bondar appeared in the centre of defence, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique played on the defensive wings, the triangle of Kryskiv, Bondarenko and Sudakov acted in the middle of the field, Zubkov and Kevin were the wingers, and Eguinaldo had a central forward position.

A spectacular half with a comeback after the goals by Zubkov and Sudakov

The teams started the match as actively as possible and created dangerous moments from the first minutes. Already in the opening stages, the forward of the visiting team, Ganvoula, shot next to the post, and near the opposite goal, the ball hit the hand of Young Boys defender, but the referee did not award a penalty. The Miners scored in the 8th minute – Kevin scored after a long attack, but the officials from Israel intervened here too, disallowing the goal due to offside. Eguinaldo had a great chance, when he went one on one after Zubkov’s pass, but he did not beat the goalkeeper. Zubkov himself threatened the opponent’s goal with a long-range shot – in centimetres from the post. With such attacking pressure from the Pitmen, the goal of the Swiss side was completely unexpected and illogical: in the 27th minute, the visiting team dispossessed Bondarenko of the ball by pressing, and Imeri sent Riznyk the wrong way with a shot from outside the penalty area. But Marino Pusic’s team equalised the score already in the 31st minute: Kevin launched an attack on the left wing, Sudakov broke into the penalty area and shot from the goal line to the centre of the goalmouth, where Oleksandr Zubkov sent the ball into the net with a one-touch shot – 1-1.The Orange-and-Blacks continued to move forward, and if Eguinaldo’s attempt was blocked by the goalkeeper, in the 41st minute, Heorhii Sudakov took over the game and put the ball into the far corner with a great shot from the right edge of the penalty area – 2-1.

Control of the game and moments, but the score did not change

The second half has also started with attacks by Shakhtar: the ball flew into the hands of the goalkeeper of the Bern team after Zubkov’s long-range shot, and in the next episode, Kryskiv led Eguinaldo to the goal, the latter fell in a fight with the opponent, but referee Orel Grinfeld ignored this fall again. Bondarenko created another chance for his teammate, passing to Konoplia for a shot, the latter missed the target. The game slowed down towards the middle of the half, but the Miners did not lose control and did not allow the opponent to threaten Riznyk’s goal. Meanwhile, the head coach of the Swiss team used all substitutions, and Marino Pusic made the first one only in the 68th minute, releasing Sikan as a centre forward instead of Eguinaldo. The Pitmen created another moment after a beautiful combination on the left wing: Sudakov played with Matviienko and led Zubkov to a shooting position with a neat pass, but Oleksandr’s shot went near the fat post. After that, Kevin tried to turn Konoplia’s cross home – the ball flew into Keller’s hands. Then the Swiss also made several dangerous attacks, but the attempts of Smith and Ganvoula were blocked by the players of the Orange-and-Blacks, and the confident actions of Bondar saved the team in some episodes. The final stretch was dominated by the champions of Ukraine: Sikan could have scored after a corner, but the ball got stuck on the goal line and was kicked out.

2-1 – Shakhtar claimed a strong-willed victory over Young Boys and achieved the first win in this Champions League!
