Shakhtar midfielder Herohii Sudakov about the victory over Young Boys, the Player of the Match award and the support of the fans
– Heorhii, Shakhtar claimed an important victory in the Champions League, congratulations to you and the team on that. How can you rate the team’s performance?
– As you correctly said, this is a crucial victory. It is difficult to evaluate: it seems that when the team wins in the Champions League, no matter against which opponent, it is already a good achievement. Therefore, we move forward. Plus, three points are very important for us at this moment. And we still have four games, so we will do everything possible to reach the next stage.
– Your goal in this match gave more confidence to the team. Please recall the episode when you scored.
– I remember that Oleksandr Zubkov received the ball on the wing, I found free space in the middle, he passed to me, I saw Eguinaldo and gave him a heel pass, he played one-two with me, then I beat another footballer, saw free space and shot. It was a good goal.
– You also had quite an interesting celebration. What does it mean?
– Nothing. Just a celebration.
– In addition to the scored goal, you assisted Zubkov during the first goal. Is it a practised scheme or pure improvisation?
– We work on that, practise the build-up specifically in the positional attack. I saw free space, rushed in, Kevin gave me a good pass, I saw Oleksandr running to the goal and made a cross to him. I think, first of all, it is a good team goal.
– You won the Player of the Match award. What does it mean to you and which award is it already in the Champions League?
– This is the second award. Perhaps, I am, first of all, proud of myself, as I already said, because it is a childhood dream to win the MVP award in the Champions League. But most importantly, the team won – for me it is a more positive thing. So, we move forward.
– Even though it is your second MVP award, do you have the same emotions when you receive it? Because we saw that it was very nice and touching for you.
– Yes, of course, it is touching and nice. And it is probably very important for me now because I have faced some criticism from our experts lately, so these achievements give me confidence in the future.
– What do you personally think of Shakhtar’s chances in the European season after this match?
– It is very difficult to talk about any chances – there are incredibly tough opponents ahead. We will do our best, play our football, and then the result will show it.
– How much support do you feel from the fans at the Veltins-Arena?
– There is a very good atmosphere, the fans support us. We are playing in Germany for the second year in a row, we know that there are many refugees from Ukraine here, and Germany supports us, so the atmosphere is good.
– Do you perhaps have something to say to them?
– Thank you for your support and your trust, probably, because it is also very important in such a difficult time for us. All these victories are for you!
