Shakhtar faced Arsenal London away in the UEFA Champions League league phase round 3

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for this game: Riznyk played in the goal, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique appeared on the defensive wings, Bondar and Matviienko acted in the centre of defence, Kryskiv, Bondarenko and Sudakov appeared in the middle of the field, Zubkov and Eguinaldo acted as wingers, and Sikan returned to the centre of attack.

Worthy confrontation with an unfortunate own goal

The host team started the meeting with powerful pressure, but the Orange-and-Blacks acted reliably and calmly in defence, and the only moment in the beginning of the match came after the set piece – Calafiori shot from the centre of the penalty area over the target after a cross from a corner. The Pitmen responded with two dangerous counterattacks. First, Eguinaldo dispossessed the opponent of the ball, dribbled it to the penalty area, where he played with his teammates several times, but he did not make a shot. A little later, Pedro Henrique and Sikan led Eguinaldo to a convenient position, but the Brazilian’s shot from the penalty area line was blocked. Still, the Gunners managed to open the scoring in the 29th minute: Martinelli moved from the left wing to the centre of the penalty area and shot into the near post from which the ball hit Riznyk and flew into the net. The Londoners had two more opportunities to exploit their success before the end of the half, but Matviienko saved the team in the first episode when he prevented Havertz from shooting, and in the second moment, Riznyk reacted to a close-range shot by Jesus. A minute before the break, the Ukrainians could have also fought back when Sudakov launched a quick attack, took on several opponents and rolled the ball to Eguinaldo for a shot, but the Brazilian missed the target.

Even game and very real chances to save themselves

At the beginning of the second half, Arsenal players had more ball possession and build their attacks without haste: Trossard shot dangerously twice – the ball flew next to the post both times, and Martinelli’s shot from the left edge of the penalty area was saved by Riznyk. The Miners responded with their own moment: the teammates brought the ball to the centre of the field to Eguinaldo, but the defender of the Londoners blocked a shot by the Brazilian at the last moment. In the middle of the half, Marino Pusic made first substitutions, fielding fresh Kevin and Pedrinho. At the same time, the Pitmen levelled the game and carried out several promising attacks, but almost got a second goal out of nothing: in the 77th minute the ball hit Bondar’s arm in the penalty area, the referee awarded a spot-kick, but Riznyk saved the team, blocking Trossard’s shot into the centre of the goal with a kick. After receiving a morale boost, the Miners rushed forward and had the opportunity to save the game. Sudakov’s long-range shot went over the crossbar, a sharp cross to the goalmouth by Pedro Henrique was intercepted by the goalkeeper of the host team. Traore and Marlon Gomes were thrown into the battle for the final stretch, and in the last minutes, the Orange-and-Blacks arranged a real attack on the goal of the Gunners and had two great moments in the added time. First, Pedrinho shot powerfully from outside the penalty area under the right post – Raya turned it for a corner with great difficulty. And finally, after the cross from the right wing, Marlon Gomes could have scored with a header from the box line, but he failed to kick the ball properly. 0-1 – Shakhtar lost to Arsenal minimally in London.

The Miners will play their next Champions League match in Gelsenkirchen against Swiss Young Boys on November 6. The meeting at Arena AufSchalke kicks off at 19:45 Kyiv time.

And this Sunday, October 27, the Ukrainian Clasico between Dynamo and Shakhtar awaits us in the UPL round 11. The game will take place in Kyiv and will kick off at 18:00.
