Shakhtar hosted Atalanta in Gelsenkirchen in the 2nd round of the UEFA Champions League league phase

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic made several changes in the line-up compared to the previous match of the European Cup: Taras Stepanenko and Marlon Gomes appeared in the centre of the field, defender Alaa Ghram made his debut in the Champions League, and Eguinaldo played at the helm.

Two conceded goals without response before the break

The beginning of the game was quite even – both teams tried to combine and search for ways to approach the opponent’s goal. Marlon Gomes intensified the situation several times – without finishing. The visiting team adapted faster and created the first moment, when Lookman shot near the post. And in the 21st minute, the Italians opened the scoring: Djimsiti kicked the ball into the net from the box line after a penalty kick and a pass from the left wing. The Bergamo-based side continued to dominate the game and create danger – Samardzic and De Ketelaere had chances, and Lookman hit the crossbar. And the Nigerian scored the second goal when he completed the combination move of his teammates with a shot from the centre of the penalty area in the 44th minute.

Attempts to fight back were unsuccessful

After the break, Yukhym Konoplia appeared on the field and could have scored immediately, but he missed the left corner after Eguinaldo’s pass. Instead, the opponents took their chance, and in the 48th minute, Bellanova turned the cross from the left wing home to the far post. Soon Heorhii Sudakov could have scored one goal when he passed through the left wing and shot into the near corner – the ball went in centimetres from the post. In the middle of the half, the coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks made a triple substitution, releasing Bondarenko, Kevin and Traore, and Newertton appeared on the field later. The game slowed down towards the end of the match, although the Pitmen did not stop trying to score their first goal in the tournament. Bondarenko’s shot was blocked by the defenders of the Italians, Zubkov’s kick from outside the penalty area missed the target, and Kryskiv hit his teammate after a penalty kick. 0-3 – Shakhtar lost to Atalanta.

The Miners will play their next match in the Champions League in London against English Arsenal on October 22. The meeting at the Emirates Stadium kicks off at 22:00 Kyiv time.

And next Sunday, October 6, Marino Pusic’s team will host LNZ in Lviv in the 9th round of the UPL (the game kicks off at 15:30).
