Shakhtar faced Obolon away in the Ukrainian Cup preliminary stage
The head coach of Shakhtar women’s team chose the following starting line-up for the cup match: Karban played in the goal, Sikorska, Veherych, Lutsan and Kotovets formed the defensive line, Zaborovets, Starukhina, and Myronenko acted in the centre of the field, Mokhnach and Mostova appeared on the attacking wings, Vykaliuk had a central forward position.
Lutsan’s sending-off and chances of Zaborovets
The first minutes passed in a fight for the initiative mainly in the central part of the field without a large number of moments. The White-and-Greens controlled the ball more often and looked for the ways to approach Karban’s goal, while Shakhtar defended responsibly and tried to counterattack through fast wing. The key episode of the game happened in the 21st minute: Myronchuk went to meet the goalkeeper after a throw-in, and Lutsan knocked down the forward, making a desperate foul, after which the referee gave a straight red card. The coaching staff of the Miners reacted with a double substitution, fielding Kravchuk and Henyk. Despite sending-off, Shakhtar did not close in their own half of the field and started combining near the penalty area of Obolon, but it did not lead to the final shot. Instead, the White-and-Greens responded with two shots by Hnydiuk from the semi-circle – over the crossbar. In the 37th minute, the Miners could have opened the scoring when Zaborovets tried to turn Mostova’s cross right home with a header, but the ball hit the crossbar, and Starukhina’s subsequent attempts were blocked. At the end of the half, Zaborovets had another opportunity when she won the ball in the air and shot in centimetres from the post.
Wide-open game
During the break, the coaching staff of Shakhtar made a double substitution, fielding forward Chendei and goalkeeper Ustinova. At the beginning of the second half, the teams demonstrated a high pace, and the game was played toe-to-toe. The White-and-Greens were the first to create the dangerous moment: after a splitting pass from deep, Myronchuk went to meet Ustinova but let the ball go far and failed to take advantage of the opportunity. The Donetsk team responded with Myronenko’s tight shot – over the target. In the 74th minute, the host team launched a promising attack that they finished with Hnydiuk’s shot – Ustinova played reliably. Then Pasko’s goal was threatened when Zaborovets reacted to Mostova’s pass and aimed at the gate, but the ball went near the post. At the end of normal time, Skiriak did not manage to take a perfect opportunity when she could not adjust for a pass and hit an unguarded net.
Penalty shootout decided the fate of the game
Shakhtar looked more proactive in the added 30 minutes and were the first to create an opportunity when Zaborovets tried to turn a direct wing cross from Mokhnach home, but the midfielder lacked accuracy. The host team responded with an attack, and Hnydiuk made a long-range shot. In general, they threatened Ustinova’s goal from a long distance without being able to pass the defence of the Miners. The Donetsk team moved the ball forward mainly on the right wing, using speed qualities of Vykaliuk and Mokhnach. The Orange-and-Blacks continued to control the ball and combine near the opponent’s penalty area. Zaborovets and Myronenko shot after successful individual actions, but the opponents blocked their attempts. However, the attacks of the White-and-Greens turned out to be successful, and in the 111th minute, Skiriak gave Obolon a lead with an accurate shot. The head coach of Shakhtar women’s team responded with a substitution: Liakhovych replaced Vykaliuk on the field. Shakhtar immediately pressed the host team and managed to convert their opportunity when Chendei equalised the score with a header in the 119th minute of the match.
Liebiedieva opened the scoring, and Pasko saved a shot by Zaborovets. Then Skvortsova and Kravchuk made effective shots, while Hnydiuk and Myronenko missed the target. Tkachenko was the next to shoot off target, and Starukhina equalised the score with an accurate shot. The fate of the match was decided by Vasyliuk’s well-placed kick and Pasko’s save after Chendei’s shot.
