Commentary of head coach of Shakhtar women’s team Roman Zaiev after the cup game against Obolon
– Cup matches are different from championship games, a lot depends on the psychological factor, especially considering that girls are quite emotional. Unfortunately, the pattern of play that we built before the beginning of the match did not work, and the quick sending-off also led to adjustments. We had to reorganise, which adversely affected the course of the match and the result.
– Was Sofiia Lutsan sent off fairly?
– To be objective, those were two equal episodes from both teams. Literally three minutes after sending-off, there was a similar situation near the goal of Obolon, when Vykaliuk could go one on one, but the referee did not react the way she did in Lutsan’s case for some reason.
– Despite playing in the minority, Shakhtar constantly created chances, the girls showed character. Are you satisfied with dedication of the players?
– Qualification of Shakhtar footballers is higher than that of Obolon players, but it is necessary to show appropriate character. Some matches are different, and in the meetings where the goals are scored early the psychological factor can affect the result. Today’s game passed under high pressure, any mistake could have negative consequences for both teams. This pressure contributed to emotional exhaustion, which was not for the benefit of our team, because the girls gave a lot of emotions.
– It is noticeable that the players gave their all on the field, they started cramping toward the end of the meeting. Can it be considered that exhaustion affected the success of penalty kicks?
– Yes, of course! Despite the fact that we played in the minority, we tried to attack and wanted to score first. We put pressure on the opponent’s goal, using more energy than the opponent, and this exhaustion probably affected penalty kicks.
– How to keep the team from feeling defeated after such an emotional match?
– When the team give a lot of emotions and energy, I can only support and thank the girls for their efforts. Obviously, the lack of result has an effect and puts pressure not only on them but on the coaching staff and the entire structure of the club too. But we have to move forward.
