Captain of the Miners Taras Stepanenko came to the housewarming celebration with a special gift
The story of heroic Ukrainian Yana Stepanenko astonished the country and the world. The 13-year-old girl lost both legs as a result of a Russian missile attack on the railway station in Kramatorsk in April 2022. However, she did not give up; after treatment and getting prosthetics, she returned to a full life and began doing sports. And in the spring of 2024, she ran a 5-kilometre distance at one of the most prestigious world marathons in Boston, demonstrating the perseverance of the Ukrainian people to the world .
On April 22, Yana Stepanenko took the first symbolic kick in the UPL match between Shakhtar and Zorya, and head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic presented the girl with a personalized jersey reading PERSEVERANT Yana and her favourite number 8.
Yana and her family are displaced persons from the war-torn village of Niu-York in Donetsk Oblast. Recently, the girl admitted that together with her brother Yaroslav, she dreams of owning her own home. FC Shakhtar decided to help the Stepanenko family fulfil their dream by purchasing a three-room apartment for them in Lviv.
On September 15, Yana and her family were visited by Shakhtar captain Taras Stepanenko. He spoke with the young heroine and her family, and presented them with a special gift – the Miners’ scarf that the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had rescued from one of the houses in the Stepanenko family's native Niu-York.

Yana is passionate about running and ran 5 km in the Boston Marathon with prosthetics – it's really cool! She and her family are great people. I think she will manage to overcome more than one marathon
Taras Stepanenko, Shakhtar captain:
– The fate of this family was difficult, but they did not break down or give up. Yana is passionate about running and ran 5 km in the Boston Marathon with prosthetics – it's really cool! She and her family are great people. I think she will manage to overcome more than one marathon. When Yana took the first kick in the match between Shakhtar and Zorya, the president of our club Rinat Akhmetov saw it. He asked about this family and what he could do to help them, and ultimately arranged for the Stepanenko family to receive an apartment in Lviv. And now they live here. It was very nice to visit them and talk. I felt at home. Very friendly and cosy atmosphere. It's nice to see them smiling and enjoying life. These are very strong people.

We are very grateful to FC Shakhtar that we now have our own home, that we don't need to move anywhere else. Children are happy – I am happy too. And Shakhtar players are always welcome here!
Natalia Stepanenko, Yana's mother:
– Little by little, we are getting used to the new apartment. It is nice to realize that you are not in rented accommodation, not in a dormitory, but really in your own home.
