Shakhtar U19 defeated Bologna U19 in the productive match of the 1st round of the UEFA Youth League

Head coach of Shakhtar U19 Oleksii Bielik chose the following starting line-up for the first European Cup game of the season: Bahlai played in the goal, Oharkov and Drozd appeared on the defensive wings, Kostiuk and Bashmarin acted in the centre of defence, Bundash, Tsukanov and Tiutiunov played in the middle of the field, Strilchuk and Halonskyi acted as wingers, Lomaha had a central forward position.

Goals by Lomaha and Tsukanov

The opening minutes of the match passed in a struggle which was complicated by a heavy rain in Valsamoggia. In the 7th minute, the referee decided to stop the game due to unfavourable weather conditions, and the match was postponed to the next matchday. The game resumed at the Renato Dall'Ara stadium on Thursday, September 19, at 17:00 Kyiv time. The Pitmen quickly took the lead thanks to a successful counterattack: Tiutiunov moved to the semi-circle, after regaining the ball in the central circle, and passed to Tsukanov who moved from the wing after handling the ball and hit the target with an accurate shot. After that, the Red-and-Blues began to combine more actively near the penalty area of the Miners. During one of the attacks, Ebone broke into the goalmouth where Kostiuk had to foul. The referee awarded a spot-kick, which the forward converted by shooting into the corner opposite from the goalkeeper – 1-1. Later, the Pitmen quickly seized the initiative and launched an effective attack, which Lomaha finished with a well-placed shot. Until the end of the first half, the teams mostly had a positional battle in the central part of the field.

A dramatic ending and a successful start in the European Cups

The host team began the second half more actively, and they managed to equalise the score after the corner kick already in the 50th minute: De Luca shot past Bahlai when pursuing rebounds – 2-2. Then, the coaching staff of the Pitmen strengthened the right attacking wing with a substitution, and Petruk replaced Halonskyi on the field. In response, the Orange-and-Blacks attacked through the right wing, but Tiutiunov’s attempt was blocked by De Luca. It did not take long for the Miners to organise another promising attack: Strilchuk got operative space after a diagonal pass, but he lacked accuracy. The actions of the Red-and-Blues were more successful, and in the 67th minute, after breaking into the penalty area from the wing, Tonin passed to free Menegazzo who gave Bologna U19 a lead with a one-touch shot. Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Oleksii Bielik reacted with a double substitution, reviving the half-back line: Smetana and Davydenko entered the field. In the 72nd minute, the Miners managed to equalise the score thanks to individual actions of Tsukanov who beat three opponents near the goalmouth and made an accurate shot under the crossbar – 3-3. Towards the end of the match, Shakhtar U19 completely seized the initiative and combined near the opponent’s penalty area, and they finally succeeded in the 90th minute, when Tryfanenko capped the scoring.
