Shakhtar will host Obolon on the UPL MD 7

September 23, Lviv, Arena Lviv, 18:00
The live broadcast will be available on UPL.TV

Match build-up

Shakhtar have played 5 matches since the start of the UPL, winning 3 of them. Currently, the Miners have 9 points (goal difference: 14-7) and sitting in 7th spot in the table, but still have an unfinished match against Kryvbas in hand. Marino Pusic's side claimed a confident and impressive win vs Karpaty (5-2) in the last round. The main hero of the meeting was Artem Bondarenko, who scored a hat trick, Oleksandr Zubkov and Danylo Sikan added a goal each. These three players are the most prolific at the beginning of the season.

Shakhtar also started their UEFA Champions League campaign this week. The Orange-and-Blacks tied with Bologna (Italy) in the league phase round 1 match (0-0). On Thursday, the team returned to Lviv and spent the last two days preparing for the match against Obolon. We would like to add that the Brazilian midfielder of the Miners Kevin will miss the game due to suspension.

Opponents

Obolon are spending their second season in the UPL and are in the last spot in the standings with 2 points after 6 rounds (goal difference: 2-14). The Kyiv-based side started the championship with a 2-2 draw against Kolos, followed by four straight defeats. The Brewers shared points with Oleksandriia (0-0) in the last round under new head coach Serhii Shyshchenko (who worked with Shakhtar youth team a few years ago). Thus, the capital-based team did not score for a record 473 minutes in a row. The Green-and-Whites can be credited with advancing to the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16 after defeating Kolos in a penalty shootout in the previous round.

Match background

After the revival of the Kyiv club in 2013, Shakhtar and Obolon played 3 competitive matches. In the 2014/15 season, the Orange-and-Blacks won in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 32 (1-0) and beat the Kyiv side twice in UPL matches last season (1-0 and 3-0).

Previous meeting

On March 20, the teams met at the Obolon-Arena in the Ukrainian Premier League. Danylo Sikan opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Marian Shved doubled the advantage of the visitors at the end of the first half. The same Shved sealed the win, scoring in the 90th minute. 3-0 – win of Marino Pusic’s lads.

The Shakhtar vs Obolon match will be officiated by the judging panel headed by Roman Blavatskyi. Assistants: Maksym Chertolias and Ihor Rybchenko. VAR system will be used during the game (Andrii Kovalenko will be the VAR referee).
