Shakhtar faced Veres away in the 8th round of the UPL
There were several changes in the starting line-up of the Miners compared to the previous match: Yukhym Konoplia and Pedro Henrique played on the defensive wings this time, and Marino Pusic released Pedrinho and Newertton as wingers from the first minutes.
Goalless first half
The game started with a 20-minute delay due to air raid alert. The teams spent the start of the match in a positional battle and almost without moments. The Pitmen were in possession of the ball a little more and tried to attack mainly on the left wing, where Newertton was active, but without any particular intensity. The first chance to open the scoring was created after the middle of the half: Bondar tried to turn the corner cross home with a header but missed the target. Soon another cross – made by Newertton from the left wing – ended with a dangerous shot by Traore, but the ball went in centimetres from the post again. Sudakov, Bondarenko and Newertton had half moments. The host team responded with their attack when Klots almost hit the left corner with a powerful long-range shot. And Dakhnovskyi headed the ball after the corner cross – also off target.
Sudakov scored but the opponents managed to fight back
During the break, the coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks made a substitution, fielding Oleksandr Zubkov. He actively got into the game and almost immediately made a dangerous shot from the right corner of the penalty area, but the goalkeeper saved it. Bondarenko had a good moment when he headed the ball into the goal, however, Kozhukhar reacted in this episode too. The Miners managed to open the scoring in the 64th minute: Kryskiv covered the ball with his body in the penalty area and was brought down by Smiian, and Heorhii Sudakov converted the spot-kick with a shot into the right bottom corner – 0-1. Then, the Pitmen could have doubled the advantage, when Kryskiv’s shot was saved by Kozhukhar, and Traore headed from the centre of the penalty area, but the opponents cleared the ball off the goal line. And in the 81st minute, the host team scored unexpectedly: Riznyk beat Haiduchyk in one-on-one, but the ball bounced to Klots who hit the left corner with a long-range shot and equalised the score. In the remaining time, the Miners had the opportunities to win, but Zubkov shot in centimetres from the post from the penalty area, and Newertton’s header hit the crossbar in the added minutes. 1-1 – a draw between Shakhtar and Veres.
Next, Marino Pusic’s team are preparing for the second match of the UEFA Champions League. Shakhtar will host Italian Atalanta in Gelsenkirchen on October 2. The game will take place at the Veltins-Arena (Arena AufSchalke) and will kick off at 19:45 Kyiv time.
