Shakhtar played against LNZ away on the UPL MD24
Manager of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic made two changes in the starting line-up comparing to the previous encounter: Kiril Fesiun played in goal, Mykola Matviienko partnered Valerii Bondar at centre-back, Pedro Henrique appeared at left-back, Pedrinho returned to the right winger role, with Eguinaldo getting the centre-forward spot from the off.
Powerful start and unstoppable Marlon Gomes
The Miners started the match with aggressive attacks and maximum pressure in the opposing half, which quickly paid off. After dangerous shots from Pedrinho (wide of the right post) and Marlon Gomes (high) in the opening minutes, early goals came. The score was opened in the 7th minute when Sudakov found Bondarenko on the right side of the penalty area with his signature delivery, the latter challenged for the ball and moved it into the centre, where Marlon Gomes fired it into the top corner, making it 0-1. Within minutes, the Pitmen increased their lead: they intercepted the ball on the left flank, Marlon Gomes broke through the front line and crossed into the goalkeeper's area, with Cherkasy defender Daiko slicing the ball into his own net – 0-2. But Marino Pusic's lads did not stop there, adding a third in the 20th minute: Sudakov brought Eguinaldo through on target, the forward’s attempt was blocked by the keeper, but Marlon Gomes was there to finish it off – 0-3. It was only after that the Orange-and-Blacks eased off the pressure a bit, allowing the opponents to play. LNZ footballers did scored a goal midway through the half, but Momoh’s effort was ruled offside. Near the break, Daiko almost achieved a unique achievement, a double of own goals, when he unsuccessfully headed under the crossbar of his own net. However, Kucherenko made the save, turning the ball into a corner.
Parade of chances and exchange of goals in the dying minutes
From the start of the second half, both teams were highly active, continuously exchanging sharp attacks and creating dangerous chances. In the early minutes, Fesiun saved a powerful shot under the crossbar from Eynel, and Marlon Gomes' close-ranger was blocked by the goalkeeper. After that, the netminders remained in the spotlight: Kucherenko saved the hosts after attempts from Eguinaldo and Pedrinho, while Fesiun again denied Eynel. Midway through the half, LNZ striker Momoh had two good opportunities – first, he missed a cross from his teammate, and then hit the post twice. The coaching staff of the Miners refreshed the team with substitutions, fielding Nazaryna and Traore, followed by Newertton, Alisson and Hlushchenko. Shakhtar Brazilian newcomer Alisson was immediately presented with a chance, nearly curling the ball into the left corner from outside the penalty area. In the final moments, the spectators saw two more goals. In the 86th minute, LNZ footballer Salihu headed a corner at the near post to pull one back, and in injury time, the defending champions had the last word: during the counterattack, Bondarenko brought Traore through on goal, and the striker beat the goalkeeper with an elegant shot into the far corner.
