The resumption of the UPL round 5 match between Shakhtar and Kryvbas took place on April 16
The teams started this game on September 1, 2024. At that time, the starting line-up of the Miners included Riznyk, Vinicius Tobias, Bondar, Matviienko, Pedro Henrique, Stepanenko, Kryskiv, Sudakov, Pedrinho, Eguinaldo, and Sikan.
Intense game and Stepanenko’s goal in the first half of the showdown
In the first half of the September meeting, the teams competed for the opportunity to establish control over the game, but the initiative of the Orange-and-Blacks emerged gradually. Sudakov shot low into the far corner – Klishchuk saved. Several dangerous throw-ins and crosses to the penalty area caused difficulties for the defenders of the Kryvyi Rih team, and after another cross from Pedrinho, Romanchuk almost turned the ball into his own net. Vernydub’s side also had a chance, but Sosah shot over the crossbar from the penalty area. And yet, the Pitmen managed to open the scoring then: in the 40th minute, Pedrinho found Sudakov on the left flank with a diagonal pass, the latter passed to the near corner of the goalmouth, and Taras Stepanenko jumped out from behind the defenders and headed the ball into the top corner – 0-1. The second half started with an exchange of moments: Eguinaldo made a one-touch shot from the right edge of the penalty area – the ball went near the post, in response, Sosah narrowly missed the top corner with a free kick. In the 51st minute, the match was interrupted due to an air raid alert, and the teams did not return to the field that day, and the game was postponed to the spring part of the season.
Exchange of goals during the resumption with the final victory of the Miners
Over the past seven and a half months, both teams have undergone personnel changes, so Shakhtar head coach Marino Pusic rebuilt the squad: Kiril Fesiun took place between the sticks, Marlon Gomes and Artem Bondarenko formed the midfield, and Kevin appeared in attack.
The second half began with counterattacks, but the Orange-and-Blacks were sharper, and this quickly brought results. In the 62nd minute, Bondarenko and Kevin launched the counterattack, Pedrinho found Sudakov on the right wing of the penalty area, the latter shot to the goal-area line, and Kevin sent the ball into the empty left corner with a one-touch shot – 0-2. Already in the 67th minute, the match was briefly interrupted again due to an air raid alert. After the game resumed, Kevin had two more moments: in one episode, the Brazilian was flagged for offside, in the other, his attempt was blocked. In response, the host team created several chances: Tverdokhlib’s shot was saved by Bondar, and Mykytyshyn’s attempt was blocked by Fesiun. And in the 77th minute, the Kryvyi Rih team earned a spot-kick, but Ilic slipped during the conversion and touched the ball twice, thus his goal was not allowed. But in the 85th minute, Kryvbas did reduce the gap – Tverdokhlib turned Dibango’s cross home at the right post with a header. Kuzyk could have secured a draw at the end of the match, but Fesiun saved his shot.
2-1 – Shakhtar defeated Kryvbas in a unique match that stretched over 228 days.
The Miners will have their next meeting in the UPL on Saturday, April 19, when Marino Pusic’s team will host Kolos in the round 25 game. The match will take place at the Arena Lviv and will kick off at 18:00.
