Shakhtar played against Polissia in the Ukrainian Cup semi-final match on April 23

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic returned goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, who had recovered after an injury, to the starting line-up, and released three nominal central defenders from the first minutes: Valerii Bondar, Mykola Matviienko and Alaa Ghram. Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique acted on the defensive wings, Artem Bondarenko and Marlon Gomes appeared in midfield, Kevin and Pedrinho played as wingers, and Eguinaldo took the forward position.

Playing at a high pace, but without goals before half-time

In the first half, the Orange-and-Blacks acted proactively: they controlled the ball, combined more in the opponent’s part of the field and created intensity more often. Pedrinho should have scored already in the opening stages, but he hit the goalkeeper from the centre of the penalty area. Later, Bondarenko sent Pedrinho one-on-one with Kudryk with a great pass, but the goalkeeper was again the winner of the duel. The Zhytomyr side tried to respond with quick counterattacks – in one of them, a timely tackle by Vinicius Tobias saved the team, in another episode, Bondar blocked the opponent’s shot. Bondarenko had the most dangerous moment shortly before the break, the ball flew a few centimetres above the crossbar after his powerful kick from the semi-circle.

Plenty of moments, but lack of execution again

The second half of the match started with counterattacks. Krushynskyi shot into the hands of Riznyk from an advantageous position, and Kevin dealt with Chobotenko in the penalty area and hit the right post with a curling shot. Then Eguinaldo’s attempt from the centre of the penalty area was blocked by Kudryk, and Nazarenko narrowly missed the bottom corner from afar. The intensity of the game did not decrease, and then the goalkeeper saved the Zhytomyr team after shots by Bondar and Kevin. Eguinaldo had a great opportunity in a quick attack, when he broke through to the goal from the left flank and shot diagonally, but Kudryk saved again. In the middle of the half, the Pitmen could claim a spot-kick when Pedrinho beat Sarapii and fell in the penalty area after contact with him, but referee Dmytro Panchyshyn did not record a foul here. In the 82nd minute, Marino Pusic made his first substitutions: Heorhii Sudakov and Lassina Traore appeared on the field. The Miners immediately created two more chances: Bondar failed to turn the cross home at the right post with a one-touch shot, and Vinicius Tobias, coming from the same wing, shot wide with his left foot. The Orange-and-Blacks could have snatched the victory in the added minutes: Marlon Gomes shot from 12 metres after a cross from Vinicius Tobias, but Sarapii rushed towards the ball, and after a corner kick, several attempts to score from the penalty area were blocked by the defenders of the Zhytomyr team. Therefore, the regular time ended without goals – 0-0.

Alisson’s debut goal brought victory

In the first extra time, Shakhtar made three more substitutions – Alisson, Yehor Nazaryna and Dmytro Kryskiv appeared on the field. Both teams started to act much more cautiously, so the sharp moments were reduced to a minimum. However, in the second overtime, the Miners became more active and managed to launch a decisive attack after several dangerous attempts. In the 114th minute, Kevin sent the ball to the centre of the penalty area from the left wing, Sudakov passed to Traore, who held the ball and passed to the right to Alisson, and the young Brazilian confidently beat the goalkeeper – 0-1. The Zhytomyr side tried to arrange a final attack and save the game, but the Pitmen played the final minutes reliably and kept the result.

1-0 – Shakhtar defeated Polissia and advanced to the Ukrainian Cup final, where they will face Dynamo Kyiv on May 14, also in Zhytomyr.

And we have another Ukrainian Clasico next Sunday. On April 27, the UPL round 26 match between Shakhtar and Dynamo will take place in Lviv. The game at the Arena Lviv will kick off at 18:00.
