A commemorative award for the scorer of the milestone goal in the history of the club
On April 25, Shakhtar players held a training session in Lviv, after which a tribute was paid to Marlon Gomes, who had scored the milestone 1,000th goal by the Brazilians in the club’s history in the UPL match against Kolos a week earlier.
Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic presented Marlon Gomes with a symbolic personalised jersey bearing the number 1,000, while his teammates congratulated the midfielder with a vibrant collage featuring all the Brazilians who have scored for the Donetsk club.
After the ceremony and an improvised photo session, Marlon Gomes answered questions from the club's press service.
– Marlon, you scored the 1,000th Brazilian goal in Shakhtar's history in the match against Kolos. What does it mean to you personally?
– I'm very happy! This is, of course, a nice achievement. I must acknowledge all the Brazilians who contributed to this achievement – both those who are currently in the team and those who played for the club in the past and helped Shakhtar win trophies, taking their places in history. I want to thank all the guys who are currently in the team, as well as other Brazilians: Newertton, Kevin, Pedrinho, Eguinaldo, and all my compatriots who helped increase the number of goals scored in Shakhtar's Brazilian history.
– Which names from the past have inspired you?
– I followed many Brazilians at Shakhtar, know many of them, and I have to thank them all for being a source of inspiration to me, to some extent. From the club’s recent history, it's Fred and Alan Patrick, whom I have watched and continue to watch, who inspired me with their play. If I mention my personal acquaintances, it's Alex Teixeira, with whom I had the opportunity to play at Vasco da Gama: he helped me a lot, gave me advice and even encouraged me to move to Shakhtar. Also, my very good friend Wellington Nem, who comes from the same region as me, was another great example for me. I could always consult with him; he inspired me both with his play and with his achievements – both personal and professional.
– What do you think explains such a strong connection between Shakhtar and Brazil?
– It’s a close family bond. Many young Brazilians want to play in Europe, and Shakhtar is truly one of the great springboards for achieving this goal. The cooperation between Brazil and Shakhtar has existed for more than one year; it is very close and, most importantly, productive. It has nurtured more than one talented generation of young players. A very close bond that has proven itself through quality, emotions and high-level football on the field.
– How do you see the future of Shakhtar and your role in it?
– If I were to evaluate my potential football career, I would like to stay at Shakhtar for as long as possible, delight the fans with my play and team achievements, and give everyone reasons to be happy – both the players and the staff, and, of course, our fans. I also hope to develop as a professional, improve my football skills, be a leader on the field, honourably fulfil the duties of one of the team captains, and, through my actions, directly benefit the club.
