Shakhtar U19 hosted Dynamo Kyiv in the centrepiece match of the Youth League round 26

The coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks chose the following starting line-up for the game against Dynamo U19: Bahlai played in the goal, Drozd and Oharkov were on the defensive wings, Dankovskyi and Arroyo played in the centre of defence, Bashmarin, Bundash and Smetana appeared in midfield, Tsukanov and Tiutiunov acted as wingers, Lomaha took the centre-forward role.

Struggle in every part of the field

The Pitmen took control of the ball from the first minutes and tried to get to Surkis’ goal, while the Kyiv team committed minor fouls in the central part of the field, slowing down the pace of the Orange-and-Blacks. In the 18th minute, the White-and-Blues organised a quick attack that almost ended with a goal: Redushko broke free on the wing, approached Bahlai’s goal and passed the ball to Herych for a run, the latter shot over the goalkeeper, but Oharkov managed to cover and actually cleared the ball on the line. The Miners tried to respond with their own opportunities, building attacks mainly on the right wing, but the Kyiv team acted reliably and did not allow to create any danger near Surkis’ goal. At the end of the first half, Redushko was active among Dynamo U19, creating two scoring opportunities and opening the score in the match after an aerial fight and a well-aimed header – 0-1.

Narrow defeat and emotional resolution

After the break, the coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks released Balakai instead of Lomaha. The beginning of the second half passed toe-to-toe, with the White-and-Blues’ attacks being sharper, mostly ending with shots on goal. The Miners were in possession of the ball for a significant part of the time, but when they moved to the final stage of their attacks, they encountered serious resistance. The defenders of the Kyiv team acted compactly, tightly blocking free zones and preventing the opponents from getting close to Surkis’ goal; they also used tactical fouls, trying to decrease the pace of the opponent’s attacks and prevent them from playing quick combinations. Towards the end of the match, Ponomarenko could have doubled the lead of the visiting team, heading just under the crossbar, but Bahlai turned the ball for a corner while falling. The final minutes of the match were extremely emotional, leading to a scrimmage and a large number of sending-offs for both teams.

0-1 – Shakhtar U19 lost to their Dynamo Kyiv counterparts in their last home match of the season. In the next round, the Miners will face Chornomorets Odesa U19.
