Shakhtar hosted Dynamo in the UPL centrepiece MD26 game in Lviv

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic fielded the same line-up that had played in the Cup semi-final a few days earlier: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Bondar and Ghram operated in the centre of defence, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique played as fullbacks, Mativiienko appeared as defensive sitter, Marlon Gomes and Bondarenko formed the midfield, Kevin and Pedrinho acted on the wings, with Eguinaldo leading the line as centre-forward.

The symbolic first kick was taken by Roman Hrybov, the heroic defender of Zmiinyi Island and author of the legendary phrase about the Russian warship, which rallied millions of Ukrainians in the early days of the full-scale war and became an enduring symbol of our struggle, dignity and indomitable strength.

Powerful start with goals from Kevin and Eguinaldo

The match began with the Orange-and-Blacks having a complete advantage in the game, and they opened the scoring in the 6th minute: Eguinaldo burst into the penalty area from the right flank and was brought down by the Kyiv side defender Mykhavko, before Kevin confidently converted the penalty with a shot into the top left corner – 1-0. The Pitmen continued to control the situation on the field and dictate the pace of the game, doubling their advantage after several attacks: in the 20th minute, Matviienko’s long-ranger was parried by the visitors’ goalkeeper Neshcheret and Eguinaldo was there to finish it off – 2-0. In the middle of the half, Dynamo also played more actively, but they managed to create only a few half-chances. Vanat dangerously headed the ball after a cross from the left flank – it flew just wide of the far post. In a 4v4 situation, Yarmolenko made an unexpected decision to shoot from range, sending the ball high over the bar. Following this, Riznyk caught the ball after Shaparenko's header from a tight angle.

Playing under pressure and lost victory

The second half of the game started quite expectedly with attacks from the visitors, who immediately tried to reduce the gap. After several dangerous approaches to Riznyk’s goal they managed to score in the 56th minute: a cross from the left flank, Vanat chose a position behind the defenders and headed the ball in the opposite direction from the keeper. Marino Pusic reacted to this with a mass substitution, fielding four fresh players at once in the 62nd minute: Kryskiv, Nazaryna, Alisson and Traore. Meanwhile, the Kyiv-based side continued to press forward, and Vanat himself could have scored a brace, but he shot wide from close range, while Kabaiev struck the right post with a diagonal long-ranger. Gradually, the Pitmen moved the game away from their goal and made several dangerous attacks, but failed to finish them. Kryskiv had the best chance at the beginning of added time, but failed to beat Neshcheret in a one-on-one situation. The opponents capitalised on their final chance: In the third minute of added time, following a corner kick, the ball bounced to the centre of the penalty area, where Kabaiev volleyed it into the net. 2-2 – a draw in the Ukrainian Clasico.

Shakhtar will face Chornomorets away in the next UPL round. The game will take place in Odesa on Saturday, May 3, with kickoff at 13:00.
