Shakhtar faced Karpaty on the Ukrainian Premier League MD 2 in Lviv
The manager of the Miners Arda Turan made some changes to the line-up compared to the European match played on Thursday: Riznyk took the place between the sticks again, Bondar and Ghram were in central defence, Vinicius Tobias and Azarov appeared on the defensive flanks, Marlon Gomes, Bondarenko and Sudakov formed the midfield, Newertton and Pedrinho featured on the wings, with Kaua Elias performing as a centre forward.
Attacking play with goals from Newertton and Kaua Elias
The teams started the match very sharply, and goals came quickly. In the 9th minute, the Pitmen opened the scoring: a dispossession in midfield, a switch to the left flank, Newertton entered the penalty area and passed to Sudakov, who returned the ball with his heel to his teammate, and the Brazilian easily struck the far corner – 0-1. The Lviv team immediately rushed to equalise and managed to do so in the 17th minute: Igor Neves received the ball in the penalty area and shot accurately near-post from under a defender. However, the parity didn’t last long, the Orange-and-Blacks regained the initiative and took the lead again in the 23rd minute: a sweeping attack with several passes shifted from the left to the right flank, Konoplia crossed to the far post, where Kaua Elias headed the ball into the net, making it 1-2. The emotional first half resulted in several yellow cards, one of which was shown to Arda Turan, but the dangerous attacks kept coming. Sudakov had a chance to score, but his shot from the edge of the goal area hit a defender. Shortly after, Kaua Elias set up Marlon Gomes for a shot, but the ball didn’t settle well for him. The hosts also had several promising approaches to Riznyk’s goal, with their best chance coming in the last minute – Miroshnichenko struck powerfully from a free-kick but hit the crossbar.
A tense half with a dramatic finale
At half-time, Shakhtar coaching staff made a substitution: Shved came on for Pedrinho. The second half started at the same high pace with an exchange of attacks: Shakh fired from the left side of the penalty area just centimetres wide of the far post, and in response, the combination between Konoplia and Kaua Elias nearly worked again, but this time the Brazilian’s shot went over the bar. In the 57th minute, the Lviv team scored, but the referee overturned the goal after VAR review due to offside. Closer to the middle of the half, Arda Turan made three more substitutions, bringing on Hlushchenko, Ocheretko and Alisson. The Pitmen began to play more actively in attack with fresh energy: Bondarenko and Shved broke down the right flank but were denied a shot, Alisson dribbled past Pedroso but shot the ball wide from outside the net. Then, in the 77th minute, the hosts managed to score: a cross from the left flank, a knockdown by Karabin and Bruninho beat Riznyk from the centre of the penalty area. However, the goal galore didn’t stop there, with the Orange-and-Blacks founding the strength to take the lead for the third time: in the 82nd minute, Shved passed into the penalty area to Bondarenko, who elegantly turned and rolled the ball to Alisson, who finished with a one-touch shot past the goalkeeper – 2-3. Shortly after, Shved almost extended the lead again – narrowly wide of the post. The referee added 7 minutes of stoppage time and the Lions equalised for the third time: a header from Krasnopir at the near post after a cross from the left flank. However, the replay showed that Lviv player Pedrosa had fouled Konoplia in the fight for the ball before making the assist. Arda Turan’s team launched a genuine assault on the Lviv goal and had several great chances to snatch the win. Sudakov struck low from a free-kick under the bar, but Domchak managed to tip the ball for a corner. Bondarenko shot from the right edge of the penalty area – straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. And in the final seconds, Hlushchenko shot from about 12 metres over the bar. 3-3 – a bright and emotional draw between Shakhtar and Karpaty in Lviv.
Next, the Miners face more European battles. The UEFA Europa League third qualifying round second between Shakhtar and Panathinaikos will take place on Thursday, August 14. The game will be held at the Stadion Miejski im. Henryka Reymana in Kraków (Poland), with kickoff scheduled for 21:00 Kyiv time (20:00 СЕТ). Tickets for the game are still available!
