Shakhtar women’s team claimed a narrow victory over Kolos in their first home game of the new Vyshcha League season

The coaching staff of Shakhtar women’s team made one change compared with the previous match against Pantery: Myronenko started instead of Kuksa.

Holovach’s stunning goal puts the team ahead

The match began with a positional battle and mutual quick raids, but without any real danger near the goal. Roman Zaiev’s side built their attacks mostly through long balls and cross-field switches, while the Kovalivka team relied on short passes, trying to find gaps in Shakhtar defence. The first real chance came in the 18th minute, when Daiana, winning an aerial challenge, sent a header on target, but the ball struck the crossbar. The hosts responded quickly and effectively: Holovach cut inside from the flank towards the edge of the centre central semicircle and, put her team ahead with a pinpoint strike into the top corner – 1-0. Kolos immediately stepped up their efforts, trying to get to Ustinova’s goal as quickly as possible, but the Miners successfully blocked those attempts. Still, towards the end of the first half, Kolos managed to break into the final third, yet it was only Ostapiv who had a chance to level the score, she failed to hit the target from point-blank range.

Tension until the final whistle

After the break, head coach of Shakhtar women’s team Roman Zaiev made a double substitution, refreshing the midfield: Myronenko and Zavidova were replaced by Kuksa and Kotovets. The Miners started the second half more actively, spending more time in Kolos’s half, but soon the visitors seized the initiative and began countering with their own attacks. Threatening mainly from long range, the Kovalivka side reorganised and started pressing Ustinova’s goal, making active use of the flanks. In the 65th minute, Hunina fired dangerously just wide, and two minutes later Serbuk had her chance – once again, the crossbar saved the Orange-and-Blacks. Shakhtar, however, did not lock themselves in their own penalty area and could have doubled their lead when Veherych struck towards Keliushyk’s goal after a corner routine – wide. The closing minutes were extremely tense and eventful, with the most dangerous moment falling to Tian, who failed to beat Ustinova one-on-one.

1-0 – Shakhtar women’s team claimed a narrow victory over Kolos Kovalivka. The Orange-and-Blacks will face Polissia in Zhytomyr in just a week, on August 17.
