Shakhtar hosted Panathinaikos in the return leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round in Kraków

Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan named the following starting line-up for this match: Riznyk was in goal, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique played as fullbacks, Matviienko and Bondar made up the central defence, Marlon Gomes, Bondarenko and Ocheretko formed the midfield, Newertton and Alisson appeared as wingers, with Kaua Elias performing as a centre forward.

First half with chances to score

The teams began the crucial match cautiously, although the Orange-and-Blacks had an early opportunity to open the scoring: Alisson delivered a soft cross from the right half-space into the centre of the penalty area, but Kaua Elias just missed connecting with a header. Gradually, the Ukrainians took control of possession and the game, starting to play fluidly on the opposing half. One attack produced a double chance: first, Bondarenko’s shot from the edge of the box was blocked by the visitors’ defenders, and then Pedro Henrique’s follow-up strike from distance went just past the far post. Shortly after, Bondar also tested the Greek goalkeeper from range. The Athenians rarely transitioned into attacking actions in the first half and became slightly more active closer to the break, but Riznyk dealt comfortably with their crosses and shots. In the 38th minute, Shakhtar launched a positional attack down the left flank, Newertton received a pass from Kaua Elias, skilfully beat the defender and finished into the near corner, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside. A few minutes later, the Pitmen had another excellent opportunity: Vinicius Tobias played a clever through ball to Marlon Gomes in the centre, but he was closed down by Kotsiras at the last moment.

Advantage in chances, a red card and extra time

At the start of the second half, the Orange-and-Blacks launched several sharp attacks, but none were converted. The opponents responded with a long-range attempt from Cerin – the ball went just past the far post. Gradually, the game opened up, with both teams exchanging dangerous chances. Kaua Elias went for a header from Vinicius Tobias’ cross – it went just wide of the post. Pedro Henrique almost found the near corner from the left flank, but the goalkeeper reacted in time. Shortly after, Newertton shot towards the near post from the same left side of the penalty area – again, the visitors’ keeper saved them. The Greeks responded with several counterattacks, at the spear of which were Swiderski and Tete, yet neither could hit Riznyk’s goal. Shakhtar continued to press: Ocheretko unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box – just centimetres wide of the right post, Newertton again tried to create danger from his natural flank, but his shot flew over the bar. For a while, the game calmed down, but it flared up again in the 82nd minute with a highly controversial sending-off: Ocheretko collided with an opponent in midfield, although he lifted his legs to avoid a foul, German referee Daniel Siebert showed the midfielder a second yellow card, leaving Shakhtar with ten men. Arda Turan reacted emotionally to the incident and was also sent off. Even with ten men, the Pitmen created two clear chances in the dying minutes of regular time: first, Newertton, following a cross from Vinicius Tobias, almost tapped the ball into an empty net but hit the post from close range. Immediately after, Kaua Elias burst into the box but shot just past the near post. The Athenians also pressed in stoppage time, but Riznyk and the defence held firm. 0-0 – and the match went into extra time.

No goals in extra time and defeat on penalties

Shakhtar started extra time on top, creating several promising attacks: Kaua Elias just missed connecting with a teammate’s cross, and Matviienko struck powerfully from distance – the ball went out for a corner after a deflection. In the 101st minute, the coaching staff of the Pitmen made the first substitution of the match, bringing on Nazaryna. The opponents pushed forward as well, but Riznyk was excellent both off his line and in goal, dealing with shots from Ioannidis and Jedvaj. In the second period of extra time, the Orange-and-Blacks focused on defending their goal, leaving the visitors almost no chance to threaten. Riznyk only had to intervene following long-range shots from the Greeks, calmly collecting the ball each time. It was only towards the end that Maksimovic found himself in the penalty area and fired a dangerous shot, but Matviienko threw himself in front of the ball to save the team. In the final seconds, the Pitmen earned a free-kick from a tight angle, Shved sent a free kick ball into the roof of the net, but Dragowski parried it.

Shakhtar went first in the penalty shootout. Nazaryna hit the left post, while Ioannidis scored. Vinicius Tobias and Bondarenko converted their penalties, and Riznyk saved the third attempt from the opponent, keeping the scores level. Newertton scored the fourth, as did Chirivella. On the fifth attempt, Kaua Elias’ shot was saved by Dragowski, but the Athenian Zaroury fired over the bar. Everything was decided on the sixth attempt: Pedro Henrique’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper, while Mancini scored. 3-4 – Shakhtar lost to Panathinaikos and were eliminated from the Europa League.

Arda Turan’s side will now play in the UEFA Conference League play-off round against Swiss side Servette. The home match will take place in Kraków on August 21, followed by the away game on August 28. The winner of the tie will advance to the league phase of the competition.
