Shakhtar women’s team to play Polissia Zhytomyr away in the Vyshcha League round 3

August 18, Zhytomyr, Polissia TC, 13:00

Match build-up

Roman Zaiev’s side got the new Vyshcha League season off to a successful start, securing victories over Pantery Uman (3-1) and Kolos Kovalivka (1-0). It is interesting that the scoring was opened by Shakhtar captain Viktoriia Holovach in both matches. The Miners trained at the Academy facility in Shchaslyve ahead of their game against Polissia Zhytomyr. Shakhtar women’s team, having collected the maximum number of points, are in 4th spot in the league table after two rounds.

Viktoriia Myronenko, midfielder:

– It’s great to start the new season with wins and this definitely boosts the team’s confidence, we can feel that we’re moving in the right direction. Polissia are strong opponents, so we’re preparing accordingly. Above all, we aim to play quality football and continue our winning streak.

Opponents

Polissia women’s team, which finished 8th in last season’s Vyshcha League with 23 points, prepared for the new campaign at the club’s base in Zhytomyr. The Wolves played five friendlies during their training camp, winning four and drawing one.
The squad underwent changes during the summer pre-season: Sabina Azizova, Yelyzaveta Hirun and Vladyslava Prokhodnichenko left the team, while Viktoriia Seremchuk, Yana Boreiko, Veronika Holovanchuk and Olha Voitenko joined.
The start of the new season proved challenging: Polissia failed to pick up any points in the first two rounds, losing to Metalist 1925 (1-8) and Pantery (2-3).

Match background

The Orange-and-Blacks proved stronger in the only meeting between Shakhtar and Polissia in the Vyshcha League.

Previous game

On October 16, 2024, the two sides met at the Central Stadium in Zhytomyr. The Orange-and-Blacks started confidently and quickly took the lead with two goals from Chaika. Shakhtar continued to control the game and extended their advantage thanks to Veherych, who finished a cross from Vykaliuk. Polissia responded with substitutions, but they were unable to change the course of the match. In the second half, the Miners continued to dominate, with Myronenko scoring an incredible long-range goal. Polissia managed to pull a goal back after Azizova capitalised on a loose ball following a set piece. In the end, the referee’s final whistle recorded victory for Shakhtar – 4-1.
