Shakhtar hosted Kryvbas on the UPL MD14 in Lviv
Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Arda Turan made some changes to the starting line-up compared to the European game: Fesiun started in goal, Bondar and Matviienko formed the centre of defence, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique played on the flanks, Marlon Gomes, Bondarenko and Ocheretko operated in midfield, with Newertton, Eguinaldo and Meirelles as the attacking trio.
The symbolic first kick was taken by veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yehor Smykov who has defended our country on the hottest sections of the front line since 2015. He sustained a gunshot wound during the fierce fighting for the city in March 2022 and was taken into Russian captivity in April, where he spent three and a half years. The heroic defender of Ukraine has sincerely supported Shakhtar since childhood.
A vibrant half with three goals
The Miners had a chance to take the lead in the very first minute, when Marlon Gomes shot over the bar from the centre of the penalty area. The teams then exchanged sharp efforts from Mykytyshyn and Pedro Henrique, and the visitors opened the scoring in the 13th minute – Zaderaka met a low cross from the left at the near post. The Pitmen pushed for an equaliser: Ocheretko’s long-ranger flew wide of the right post and Meirelles scored from a Marlon Gomes pass in the 23rd minute, but after a VAR review the referee disallowed the goal for a foul. However, in the 38th minute Shakhtar managed to level the score: following a delivery from the right corner, Konoplia shot at the near post and hit Konaté, but Oleh Ocheretko was first to the rebound – 1-1. Just two minutes later, Kryvbas scored in similar fashion – after a corner, the ball dropped to Vilivald, who made no mistake. Kryvbas defender could have then put the ball into his own net when he misjudged Eguinaldo’s cross, but it hit the crossbar.
Eguinaldo’s equaliser and a chance to win it
At the start of the second half, the sides exchanged chances: Fesiun kept out Tverdokhlib’s powerful effort under the crossbar and Dibango’s strike towards the right post, while Meirelles headed from close range straight at Makhankov. Midway through the half, Arda Turan made a triple substitution, bringing on Kryskiv, Isaque and Kaua Elias. Shakhtar enjoyed clear superiority in possession, but breaking into the opposition box proved difficult: their combination play could not penetrate Kryvbas’ compact defensive structure, and all deliveries and crosses and from the flanks were dealt with by the visitors’ imposing defenders. However, the final push in stoppage time paid off for the Pitmen. In the sixth added minute, a free-kick delivery from the left was swung to the far edge of the goal area, Marlon Gomes headed it across to Eguinaldo, who guided the ball into the net – 2-2. The Orange-and-Blacks even had a chance to snatch victory, but Kaua Elias’s shot towards the top corner was saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper.
2-2 – Shakhtar draw with Kryvbas and remain the sole leaders of the Ukrainian Premier League.
Arda Turan’s side will play their next match on Saturday, December 6, when Shakhtar travel to face Kolos in the UPL round 15. The game in Kovalivka kicks off at 15:30.
