Shakhtar U19 faced Hoffenheim U19 away in the UEFA Youth League play-offs

The coaching staff of Shakhtar U19 chose the following line-up for the game against Hoffenheim U19: Bahlai played in the goal, Drozd and Dankovskyi appeared on the defensive wings, Bashmarin and Mylokost acted in the centre of defence, Davydenko, Tsukanov and Bundash played in the midfield, Tiutiunov and Halonskyi were the wingers, Lomaha had the central forward position.

An early goal from Hoffenheim U19 and the penalty at the end of the half

In the opening stages, the opponents exchanged goal-scoring opportunities, and the actions of the players of Hoffenheim U19 turned out to be more successful, they took the lead after the corner kick in the 5th minute – Dagdeviren scored a goal. Then, the host team tried to destabilise the defence of Shakhtar U19, creating several potentially dangerous moments, however, the defensive line of the Orange-and-Blacks acted reliably and blocked these attempts. The Pitmen defended actively and occasionally responded with their own moments mostly after the set pieces, but they did not manage to equalise the score. Towards the end of the half, the Blue-and-Whites added speed, and their pressure was evidenced by the fact that central defenders of the Orange-and-Blacks received bookings, which ultimately led to Mylokost being sent off in the 44th minute for a foul in the penalty area and the penalty kick which Onos confidently converted.

Playing under pressure

During the break, the coaching staff of Shakhtar U19 reacted to the course of events in the match with a double substitution: Petruk and Kaliuzhnyi appeared on the field instead of Halonskyi and Lomaha. Taking advantage of the numerical advantage, the host team continued to control the game and look for the ways to approach Bahlai’s goal. In the 55th minute, the Blue-and-Whites scored for the third time: Bahlai, trying to clear the ball away from the penalty area, lost control over it and was forced to foul, which resulted in a penalty: Micheler shot into the bottom corner from the penalty mark – 3-0. In response, Oleksii Bielik refreshed the centre with a double substitution, fielding Yushchenko and Smetana. Soon it worked: Drozd moved from the wing and gave the direct pass to Smetana for finishing – 3-1. However, Hoffenheim U19 did not play to keep the score and quickly organised another successful attack: Behrens led Wahling to meet the goalkeeper with a cross, and the latter beat Bahlai. At the end of the meeting, Bashmarin received a second booking for a foul against the winger of the Blue-and-Whites, which led to another penalty that Wahling converted, capping the scoring in the match.

1-5 – Shakhtar youth team lost to their Hoffenheim counterparts while playing in the minority and ended their UEFA Youth League campaign.
