Shakhtar hosted French Brest in the Champions League league phase MD 7 game
Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for the first competitive match of 2025: Riznyk played in the goal, Bondar and Matviienko acted in the centre of defence, Vinicius Tobias and Azarov played on the defensive wings, Marlon Gomes, Kryskiv and Sudakov appeared in the middle of the field, Pedrinho and Kevin were the wingers, and Eguinaldo had a central forward position.
Absolute game advantage with goals from Kevin and Sudakov
The Miners started the match as leaders: they had significantly more ball possession, combined in the rival’s half of the field and constantly looked for an opportunity to intensify the situation near the opponent’s goal. The first goal-scoring chance happened already in the opening stages, when Eguinaldo shot from the right edge to the near corner of the goalmouth, and Marlon Gomes turned this heel pass right home spectacularly – the ball flew in centimetres from the left post. And yet the champions of Ukraine logically opened the scoring: in the 18th minute, Kevin dispossessed Chardonnet of the ball in the central circle and rushed to the goal of the French team at high speed, took advantage of the fact that Eguinaldo was blocking the last defender, and calmly beat the goalkeeper – 1-0. In the middle of the half, the Pitmen could have exploited a success when Pedrinho curved the ball from the penalty area under the crossbar from a tight angle, but Bizot turned the ball away for a corner. After that, Eguinaldo had a great moment: after a cool long ball from Azarov, the Brazilian ran to the goal and shot into the far corner, but the ball miraculously flew past the post. But in the 37th minute, Marino Pusic’s team doubled their advantage: Sudakov brought Azarov one on one with an exquisite pass, and the goalkeeper knocked down the Georgian defender, and Heorhii Sudakov converted a penalty with a panenka in the centre of the goal – 2-0. Only after that, the host team allowed the Bretons to attack a little, and they even had a chance to close the gap, but Riznyk saved Magnetti’s attempt. The Orange-and-Blacks themselves had several more promising counterattacks, but each of them lacked quality finishing. The closest to the goal was Kevin, who dealt with two opponents on the left wing and aimed at the far post – Bizot saved his shot.
The pragmatic actions and the desired result
The second half also started with a dangerous attack by Shakhtar: Kryskiv played perfectly with Tobias and made a cross to the penalty area, and Sudakov shot into the near corner on the volley – the French team goalkeeper reacted and saved it. Immediately after that, an unpleasant episode happened – Eguinaldo was injured out of the blue, Traore replaced him. A few more pauses completely disrupted the pace of the game, and the opponents spent most of the half in a tight positional struggle closer to the middle of the field. Meanwhile, Marino Pusic revived the team with substitutions, releasing Yukhym Konoplia and Taras Stepanenko. Towards the end of the match, the visiting team started to press a little, but they hardly had any opportunities from the game. Lage’s powerful shot from the penalty area was dangerous, but Riznyk pulled the ball from the right top corner in a spectacular jump. In the final stretch, Artem Bondarenko and Oleksandr Zubkov appeared on the field. The Ukrainian winger even scored a third goal in the last added minute, but the referee nullified the goal due to a violation of the rules. However, it did not affect the main result.
2-0 – Shakhtar claimed a confident and important victory over Brest and continue to fight for advancing to the play-offs.
The Miners will play the final and decisive match of the UEFA Champions League league phase away against Borussia Dortmund on January 29. The game at the Signal Iduna Park will kick off at 22:00 Kyiv time.
