Shakhtar faced Borussia Dortmund away in the Champions League league phase MD 8 game

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic released the following starting line-up for the decisive match of the European campaign: Riznyk played in the goal, Vinicius Tobias, Bondar, Matviienko and Azarov formed the defensive line, Kryskiv, Marlon Gomes and Sudakov acted in the middle of the field, Zubkov and Kevin were the wingers, Pedrinho had a central forward position.

The opponents made better use of their opportunities

The beginning of the match was quite calm: both teams tried to establish control of the ball and switch to combination actions, but there was no particular intensity near the goal. The first dangerous moment was created by Shakhtar players, when Zubkov decided to shoot from a sharp angle – Kobel saved it not without problems. However, the host team managed to open the scoring: in the 17th minute, after Adeyemi's shot, the ball hit Guirassy on the goal-area line and flew into the net. In the middle of the half, the Miners seized the initiative and pressed the opponents to their penalty area, creating several promising ways to approach the goal of the Dortmund-based team, but each time they lacked the final accurate pass. The Germans responded with two chances – first Schlotterbeck missed the target with a header from a few metres, and then Riznyk saved the team after Gittens’ tight shot into the near corner. Sudakov had a chance to equalise the score, when he received a cross from his teammate from the right wing and went one on one with the goalkeeper, but the defender knocked the ball out from under Heorhii’s feet at the last moment. And Borussia scored for the second time in the 44th minute – Guirassy converted the one-on-one situation in a quick counterattack.

Marlon Gomes’ goal gave hope, but did not save

The second half of the meeting started with a spectacular save by Dmytro Riznyk, who pulled Guirassy’s header from under the crossbar. And already in the 50th minute, Marino Pusic’s team reduced the gap in the score: BVB goalkeeper Kobel unsuccessfully handled a pass in the penalty area, and Marlon Gomes sensed the situation and sent the ball into the goal in the tackle – 2-1. This goal inspired the Orange-and-Blacks, who took the game under their control again and started actively looking for ways to approach the opponent’s goal. The dangerous crosses of Sudakov and Kevin remained without a final shot, and the Brazilians circling around the penalty area bumped into the defensive wall of the Germans. In turn, Borussia created two more goal-scoring opportunities, but Riznyk was at his best again: the goalkeeper of the Pitmen first turned Bensebaini’s shot over the crossbar, and then prevented Guirassy from scoring from the corner of the goalmouth. However, the host team achieved what they wanted in the 79th minute, when after a beautiful combination, Bensebaini made a close-range shot past the goalkeeper. During the half, the coaching staff of the Miners revived the team with substitutions, fielding Pedro Henrique, Traore, Bondarenko, Newertton and Stepanenko one by one, but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle. 1-3 – the Orange-and-Blacks lost to Borussia Dortmund in the final match of the European season.

Shakhtar gained 7 points in total in the UEFA Champions League league phase and thus finished their campaign in the tournament.
