Shakhtar women’s team head coach Roman Zaiev reflects on the team’s workload during the training camp, changes in the squad and upcoming friendlies

– The first training camp cycle focused on improving fitness is coming to an end. How have these two weeks gone?
– The camp has been divided into two parts and we focused on enhancing the players’ fitness level during the first one. We trained for two hours a day, with sessions centred on exercises and overall endurance development. Judging by the last few days of training, one might have expected some fatigue, but on the contrary, the team are just starting to hit the right form for the work ahead.

– Soon the players will be training twice a day. How much will the workload increase and what will the main focus be?
– The main emphasis will be on the intensity of the exercises planned by the coaching staff. The morning session will be more intensive, aimed at building a general and specific base, with a focus on both power and speed work. Evening sessions will mainly concentrate on tactical and team drills.

– Lidiia Zaborovets and Inha Mostova left during the summer break, while several players are currently undergoing trials. What can you say about the departures and potential signings?
– First of all, I’m very grateful to both Lidiia Zaborovets and Inha Mostova – they were important players for the team in terms of building our play. Both decided not to extend their contracts with our club and moved on to other teams. We wish them success and, of course, we’ll meet again on the pitch. As for the players on trial: there were seven of them at the beginning of the camp. We’ve already parted ways with some and the future of those who remain will be decided soon.

– Should we expect any friendlies during the summer training camp?
– We have an agreement to play against the free agents team formed under the UAF on July 19. We’ll also play two test matches with different line-ups against Seasters, who will be visiting us on July 23.
