Shakhtar faced Beşiktaş away in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round
Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan selected the following line-up for this encounter: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Matviienko and Bondar acted at centre-back, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique appeared as fullbacks, Marlon Gomes, Ocheretko and Sudakov formed the midfield, Kevin and Alisson were deployed as wingers, with Eguinaldo leading the line.
Unstoppable Alisson with a goal and an assist for Eguinaldo
At the start of the match, the hosts launched several dangerous attacks amid the roaring support of the stands, with the newcomer Abraham leading the charge, but the Pitmen’s defenders and Riznyk acted reliably. The Orange-and-Blacks, meanwhile, made full use of their very first chance and took the lead in the 7th minute: the attack started on the left flank, the ball was delivered through the centre to the right side to Alisson, the Brazilian skilfully got past two opponents and shot past the goalkeeper of Black Eagles from the edge of the penalty area, making it 0-1. The Turkish side looked to respond quickly but ran into intense pressing and aggressive ball-winning from Arda Turan’s men, which proved difficult to overcome. And the Miners had several great chances to extend their lead in their quick attacks: Sudakov brought Kevin through on goal, but his shot flew over the bar; in another moment, Ocheretko picked up the ball on the right edge of the box and aimed for the near post – Günok parried it with some difficulty. Still, in the 28th minute, Shakhtar doubled their advantage: Pedro Henrique expertly switched play to the right flank, Alisson delivered a precise cross to the goal area line, where Eguinaldo jumped over opponents and headed the ball into the left corner – 0-2. The Ukrainian team could have scored a third goal before the break when, after a multi-pass combination, Kevin curled the ball into the right corner, but it went just past the post. In the closing stages of the half, Beşiktaş upped the tempo and pulled one back in the 40th minute: following a corner, the ball struck Konoplia’s hand in the box, the referee pointed to the spot, with Abraham converting the penalty. Moments later, Gedson Fernandes broke free down the right and unleashed a powerful shot toward the far corner, but Riznyk reacted and denied him with his foot.
We withstood the pressure from the stands and the opponents, with Kevin securing the winning brace
The hosts came out strong in the second half, immediately creating several dangerous chances: Rafa Silva’s shot to the near post was saved by Riznyk, and Uduokhai headed over the bar following a corner delivery. Gradually, the Orange-and-Blacks managed to push the game away from their goal and launch some promising attacks of their own: Kevin finished the team’s combination, but his shot from the left side of the goal area did not come off, while Sudakov made a great run in the penalty area for a teammate’s pass but failed to hit the target. At this stage, Shakhtar coaching staff made their first substitutions, bringing on Vinicius Tobias and Pedrinho. The match continued at a high tempo, with both sides trading attacks, but it was Shakhtar who netted the next goal. In the 67th minute, Alisson went on a dribble down the right flank, beat his opponent and delivered a cross, which Kevin expertly finished at the far post – 1-3. In the final 15 minutes, two fresh Shakhtar players entered the game – Bondarenko and Newertton. Though the Turkish side were shocked by the course of the match, they kept trying to get back into it. Fernandes had a chance when he raced one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Bondar caught up with the Portuguese player and made a spectacular sliding tackle inside the box, knocking the ball away. Kılıçsoy fired a dangerous shot, but Riznyk once again made a flawless save. Still, in the 87th minute, the hosts managed to score: Riznyk saved Rafa Silva’s long-range shot, but João Mário was first to pursue rebounds. Immediately after, Arda Turan brought on Gocholeishvili, who was tasked with helping to hold the lead. However, Shakhtar not only managed to withstand the pressure but also scored a fourth goal in the sixth minute of added time: Matviienko delivered a diagonal ball to the right wing, Alisson passed it to Bondarenko, who entered the penalty area and laid the ball off to Kevin, the Brazilian finished with a shot into the top corner to seal the win.
4-2 – Shakhtar secured a brilliant victory over Beşiktaş in Istanbul.
