On July 4, Shakhtar played the first test match against Croatian side Gorica
For his first, albeit unofficial, match in charge of the Miners, Arda Turan chose the following starting line-up: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Konoplia and Azarov appeared as fullbacks, Matviienko and Ghram acted at centre-back, Nazaryna, Pedrinho and Sudakov operated in midfield, Shved and Newerton were deployed as wingers, with Lomaha spearheading the attack.
Chances for both sides, but no goals before the break
The opponents started the match at a calm tempo, which was unsurprising given the heavy pre-season workload, but gradually increased the pace and attacking intent. The first dangerous chance came near the Pitmen’s goal, when Dmytro Riznyk saved the team twice: first parrying a powerful long-range effort, then reacting to deny the follow-up from close range. The Orange-and-Blacks responded: Nazaryna sent the free-kick just wide of the top corner, Traore headed over the bar, and two consecutive long-range efforts from Shved flew narrowly past the right post. There was an unfortunate episode midway through the half: Nazaryna was injured and replaced by Anton Hlushchenko, while Traore made way for Eguinaldo. The Brazilian immediately produced a shot on target, which the Gorica goalkeeper turned for a corner. Just before the break, both teams exchanged chances: Croatian midfielder Prsir struck the crossbar from outside the box, while Sudakov twice threatened with passes from the left towards Eguinaldo, but the visitors’ defenders intercepted just in time on both occasions.
Eguinaldo scored the first and only goal of the match
At half-time, Arda Turan made almost a full line-up change, bringing on Fesiun, Vinicius Tobias, Bondar, Faryna, Pedro Henrique, Marlon Gomes, Bondarenko, Ocheretko, Alisson and Kevin. The fresh players made an impact quickly: in the 51st minute, Ocheretko passed to Pedro Henrique on the left, who crossed to the edge of the goal area, where Eguinaldo headed it home – 1-0. Shortly afterwards, the scorer of Shakhtar’s first goal at the summer training camp was replaced by Brazilian forward Kaua Elias. The Miners continued to fully control the game and play from a position of strength, keeping possession for extended periods in the opposing half and working a variety of combinations. One such move led to a dangerous effort from Marlon Gomes from the edge of the penalty area, but the Croatian goalkeeper held on to the shot. Kevin was particularly active down the left flank, frequently threatening through individual runs and launching quick attacks for his teammates – though the final touch was missing. In one episode, the Brazilian came close to scoring, but his shot from the left side of the box missed the far post by mere centimetres. In the final minutes, Alisson could have scored spectacularly through an overhead kick from a teammate’s pass, but the ball flew over the bar.
1-0 – Shakhtar defeated Gorica in their first friendly under Arda Turan.
On July 6, the Miners play their next friendly – against Czech side Slovácko. Kick-off is at 19:00 Kyiv time. All friendly games of the Orange-and-Blacks at the training camp are streamed on Shakhtar’s YouTube channel and the FC Shakhtar mobile app (App Store and Google Play) in the Live section.
