Shakhtar assistant head coach Kerem Yavaş spoke about his role in the coaching staff and his first impressions of working with the team
– Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?
– Hello everyone, my name is Kerem, I am the assistant to Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan. As you know, we are all graduates of the Galatasaray Academy, then I worked with the Turkish Football Federation, the Türkiye national team at the youth level for three years, later I moved to the senior team and worked there with several famous coaches for about six years. Then I had a short stint with Trabzonspor, and when Arda Turan moved to Eyüpspor, we spent about two years there. Now we are at Shakhtar.
– What are your main responsibilities as an assistant coach at Shakhtar?
– I am the first assistant coach, my duties are quite broad: I deal with all aspects of the game, but mainly focus on tactical elements and opponents, and also mostly act as a link between the head coach and all internal staff.
– How does it feel to be part of Shakhtar? What emotions do you experience here?
– I can say from the heart: I am very happy to be here. Before signing, I also had a mutual connection with Shakhtar through Mister Lucescu, I worked with him in the national team. When he was about to join the national team, I analysed his work at his previous club – it was Shakhtar, so I studied how his system works there. After working with Lucescu, I also got to know Shakhtar’s play, its history and culture. And I am very glad to be here. I had no idea that I would sign a contract with Shakhtar, but now I am happy to be here!
– What can you say about current Shakhtar and what are your initial thoughts and impressions after the first few training sessions?
– We knew we had a quality team because before we arrived here after signing the contract, we were told about the squad and the players individually. But what I saw during the first training sessions exceeded my expectations. We knew about their qualities, but I realised that the footballers have even more of these qualities than I thought. So we are here to turn the quality of the players into results on the pitch. It is only the first three or four days, but we are very happy.
– What are your goals and ambitions together with Shakhtar?
– Goals and dreams will coincide with the goals and dreams of Shakhtar. When you are in a club like Shakhtar, it is considered that the only success is victory – in everything. Therefore, first of all, we dream of winning the Ukrainian League again, of being champions, but this is not enough. We will use this as a tool to achieve success in Europe. So we have dreams, but we know that Shakhtar has dreams too – if the two sides come together, I am sure we will achieve great results.
