On June 7, the Ukraine national team faced Canada in the first match of the Canadian Shield tournament

Three Shakhtar players were included in the starting line-up of the Blue-and-Yellows: defenders Mykola Matviienko (team captain) and Valerii Bondar, and midfielder Heorhii Sudakov.

The match started with an early goal by the hosts: already in the 4th minute, Jonathan David turned a wing cross home with a header and opened the scoring. Heorhii Sudakov could have scored an equaliser almost immediately, heading in after a pass from Tymchyk, but he missed the target. Almost throughout the first half, the Ukrainians had more ball possession and were looking for ways to approach the opponent’s goal, but they did not manage to convert their chances. And the Canadians, in turn, successfully took advantage of their own opportunities in counterattacks and hit Trubin’s goal twice more: in the 24th minute, Jonathan David finished off another cross to the penalty area of the visiting team with a well-placed header, and in the 31st minute, Promise David won the ball near the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper.

The second half kicked off at a slower pace and almost without any intense moments. The Ukrainians tried to establish a combination play, but they lacked finishing. Sudakov had a good chance, but the ball flew over the crossbar after his long-range shot. In the 67th minute, another Miner appeared on the field – goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, who immediately saved Nelson’s shot. Persistent Sudakov continued to look for a chance for the Blue-and-Yellows: his header almost from the goal-area line went wide. But the hosts took advantage of their opportunity: while Nelson hit the post from an advantageous position, Buchanan scored the fourth goal in the 82nd minute. However, Serhii Rebrov’s side had the last say in the match. In the 89th minute, Crepeau reacted to Hutsuliak’s shot, but Ilia Zabarnyi was the first to pursue rebounds and scored. And in the added time, a penalty against the Canadians was awarded for a handball, which Oleksandr Zinchenko confidently converted. The final result of the match was 4-2 in favour of the Canada national team.

On June 11, the Ukraine national team will play the second friendly match of the tournament against New Zealand. The meeting will also take place in Toronto and will kick off at 00:00 Kyiv time.
