Player of the Season: it’s time to pick the best at Shakhtar

5 contenders for the title of the team’s Most Valuable Player
They started the voting for Shakhtar Player of the Season 2024/25 on the club's official social media pages. The contenders for the award are the Orange-and-Blacks’ footballers who won the monthly polls: defender Mykola Matviienko (August), midfielders Artem Bondarenko (September) and Heorhii Sudakov (October, May), goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk (November) and winger Kevin (March, April).
Mykola Matviienko made 33 appearances for Shakhtar over the season (spending 3,013 minutes on the pitch), including playing every minute of all 8 UEFA Champions League league phase fixtures. He led the team onto the field with the captain's armband 31 times. Matviienko scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists, making him the most prolific defender of the Pitmen this season.
Artem Bondarenko became the record-holder of the Orange-and-Blacks for appearances this season, playing 41 of 42 matches (2,975 minutes on the pitch). The 24-year-old central midfielder is also among Shakhtar’s top scorers, having registered 12 goals and 8 assists (all 20 goal involvements coming in the UPL).
Heorhii Sudakov made 37 appearances for Shakhtar across all competitions in the 2024/25 season (3,081 minutes). He became the most prolific player of the Miners and the best based on the goal+pass system, netting 15 goals and providing 6 assists. The 22-year-old midfielder was twice awarded Player of the Month according to fan polls and was also recognised by UEFA as the best player in Shakhtar’s Champions League winning games against Young Boys and Brest.
Dmytro Riznyk made 36 appearances for Shakhtar last season, starting every game (3,291 minutes). The goalkeeper of the Pitmen played all UEFA Champions League and Ukrainian Cup matches without being substituted. He kept 16 clean sheets. In the Champions League, Dmytro set a record with 15 saves in a single match against Dutch side PSV. Shakhtar fans chose Riznyk as the club’s best player of 2024.
Kevin made 35 appearances for Shakhtar last season (2,647 minutes) and ranked among the team’s top three scorers with 9 goals (the winger also provided 4 assists). The 22-year-old Brazilian particularly impressed during the spring part of the season and was twice named Player of the Month by the fans – in March and April.
Voting for the best Shakhtar footballer in the 2024/25 season will continue for a week. The name of the winner will be announced after June 13.
