Shakhtar faced Karpaty in the 21st round of the UPL
Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for this game: Riznyk played between the sticks, Konoplia and Azarov acted as laterals this time, Bondar and Matviienko were in the centre of defence, Nazaryna, Marlon Gomes, and Sudakov appeared in the middle of the field, Kevin and Shved were on the attacking wings, with Eguinaldo playing at the helm.
Initiative and moments of the Pitmen against saves of the Lviv-based team goalkeeper
The teams started the meeting cheerfully and kept a good pace almost throughout the first half, constantly creating dangerous chances. The Miners should have scored in the opening stages: first, Kevin brought Eguinaldo to the goal in a quick attack, but the forward tried to beat the goalkeeper and lost his chance, and then Azarov decided to shoot from the left flank of the penalty area, but Kinareikin pulled the ball in the far corner. Kevin and Shved could have opened the scoring: the Brazilian’s shot was also saved by the goalkeeper, and a minute later the Ukrainian winger failed to beat Kinareikin in a close fight. The host team responded with a long-range shot by Chachua, but Riznyk blocked this attempt. The Pitmen spent the second half more actively, creating several more goal-scoring opportunities. Eguinaldo headed the ball after Azarov’s cross, but narrowly missed the target. The hero of the next episode was again the Lviv-based team goalkeeper, who saved Shved’s shot, Eguinaldo’s follow-up and prevented Sudakov from scoring. Another combination move involving Sudakov and Eguinaldo ended with the Brazilian’s shot from behind the opponent, but Kinareikin played reliably in this episode as well.
Alisson’s debut and chances of winning, but without goals
After the break, the host team also became a little more active in attack: Bruninho’s long-range shot into the left corner did not reach its target, and Kostenko performed a spectacular bicycle kick in the centre of the penalty area, but the ball flew over the goal. The Orange-and-Blacks responded with Kevin’s volley – next to the post. In the 65th minute, Marino Pusic made a triple substitution: Bondarenko, Kaua Elias, and the club’s newcomer, 19-year-old midfielder Alisson Santana, making his debut for Shakhtar, entered the field. The new players instantly added intensity up front and had their chances to score: Bondarenko pursued rebounds after Sudakov’s blocked shot, but the ball went higher, and then Heorhii led Alisson to a shooting position, the latter hit the goalkeeper on the turn. In the final ten minutes, the coaching staff of the Pitmen fielded another striker – Traore, and the Miners attacked the Lions' goal and were close to snatching the victory. First, Alisson found Bondarenko on the right edge of the penalty area, but Artem’s shot was saved by Kinareikin, and then Bondar headed the ball after a corner kick, but it went just wide of the post. 0-0 – Shakhtar and Karpaty played a draw.
