Match build-up
Shakhtar are in third spot after 19 matches with 40 points (goal difference: 46-16). In the spring part of the league, Marino Pusic's side started with victories over Livyi Bereh (1-0) and Oleksandriia (3-0), but in the last round they lost points in the match against Kryvbas (1-1). The Pitmen’s only goal in that match was scored by Artem Bondarenko, bringing his tally to 9 goals in the current championship. Heorhii Sudakov remains the team's top scorer in the Premier League (10 goals).
As before, Shakhtar players continue to be based in Lviv, where they will play their fourth consecutive match. Preparations for the match against Karpaty were once again brief, as the team had time for only a few training sessions after the previous game. It should be noted that in the upcoming match, left-back Pedro Enrique will not be able to help the Orange-and-Blacks due to suspension. At the same time, the squad of the champions of Ukraine was reinforced the day before: 19-year-old Brazilian winger Alisson Santana joined the club, becoming the team's third newcomer this year.
Opponents
Karpaty are playing their first season in the UPL since the club's re-establishment. The team are currently in 7th spot in the standings with 28 points (goal difference: 23-23). The Lviv-based side intend to compete for a place in the European competitions this year, which they confirmed with a powerful winter transfer campaign: four leaders of Rukh Oleh Fedir, Illia Kvasnytsia, Oleksii Sych and Ihor Krasnopir joined Vladyslav Lupashko's team, with Tymur Stetskov moving from Kryvbas and midfielder Patricio Tanda being loaned in from Racing (Argentina).
Karpaty started the second half of the championship with a defeat to Dynamo (0-2), then claimed a narrow win against LNZ (1-0) and tied with Vorskla (0-0) away in the previous round. The most prolific players of the Lions are Ambrozii Chachua and Ihor Krasnopir (both have 6 goals in the current UPL season).
Match background and previous meeting
The first and so far only competitive match between Shakhtar and the current Karpaty took place on September 14, 2024, in the first round at Arena Lviv and was a high-scoring affair. The Miners took the lead when Zubkov scored in the 21st minute, but the Lviv team quickly responded with a precise shot from Pidlypenets. However, before the break, Bondarenko’s brace and Sikan’s goal put the result beyond doubt. In the middle of the second half, Bondarenko completed his hat-trick, and towards the end of the match, Karpaty's Chachua slightly reduced the score for his team. However, the victory for Marino Pusic's side was unquestionable – 5-2.
The Karpaty vs Shakhtar match will be officiated by the judging panel headed by Vitalii Romanov. Assistants – Valentyn Kutsev and Vitalii Skoblia. VAR – Ihor Balakin.
The live broadcast will be available on UPL.TV
