Head coach of Shakhtar women’s team Roman Zaiev talked about the victory in the tournament dedicated to the memory of Viktoriia Chornovil, results of the training camp and tasks in the second stage of the championship
– The meeting with Pantery was the final one for Shakhtar in the pre-season. What is your assessment of the match and the team’s results in the friendly tournament dedicated to the memory of Viktoriia Chornovil?
– Overall, we considered participation in this tournament as a preparatory stage for the second part of the season. The entire schedule of workload was organised so that each game concluded the week. The match against Pantery was supposed to answer the question of how ready the team are currently. Unfortunately, the quality of play that we want to see did not work today for objective reasons. Perhaps the high temperature for the early spring part of the season had an impact, which affected the physical condition of the players and their movement on the field. Also, the artificial turf affected the bounce and speed of the ball, which was one of the reasons for the unsuccessful actions of the team. First of all, I want to congratulate the girls on winning the tournament, but there are aspects that still need to be worked on.
– Shakhtar demonstrated high performance during the tournament and finished the competition undefeated. What does this indicate and are you satisfied with the work of the team?
– There are no comments about the girls’ attitude to their work. All the players tried to perform as well as possible, and the coaching staff tried to provide game practice to all the footballers. Someone used their chance better, someone, perhaps, not so spectacularly, but there are no complaints. As for the performance, we strive to play impressively in every match, with a focus on attack. If possible, we require the players to convert as many created chances as possible, because this has a positive effect on psychology and confidence in future matches.
– The training camp is coming to an end. Summarise the two-month training and assess the team’s readiness for the resumption of the championship.
– We did everything planned in full. We have literally a week until the championship resumes and we are approaching the first match. We need to rest and recover both physically and psychologically to be ready for the higher-level games. They will show the progress the team have made in half a year.
– What tasks will Shakhtar have in the second part of the season?
– We are currently in a situation where we are not being asked to become national champions at any cost. However, we understand that Shakhtar is a brand that is being watched and from which spectacular moments are expected. We start from the fact that we have to compete with all teams, regardless of whether they are from the top three or the second three. Every opponent must feel the power and pressure of Shakhtar throughout the match.

– Since the team have been working non-stop for two months and only had a week off, we need to change the mental approach. The girls should rest from the ball, football, the pressure of the competition and the coaching staff, so we gave our players four days off, and then we will start preparing for the next matches.
