Shakhtar Stalevi have won their first medals in official competition

On May 10–11, the Ukrainian Association of Football held the Spring Cup as part of the League of the Mighty social project at the Viktor Bannikov Stadium in Kyiv. It was the second official amputee football tournament.

Eight amputee football teams from Kyiv, Lviv, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Lutsk took part in the competition: MSK Dnipro, Burevii, Pokrova AMP, Pokrova AMP-2, Shakhtar Stalevi, Dnipro Chest – Nezlamni, FC Khrestonostsi and FC AMP Vinnytsia. The matches were played under adapted amputee football rules that take into account the physical characteristics of the athletes.

The teams were divided into 2 divisions according to the tournament format: the Super League (for experienced players) and the First League (for debutants). The tournament began with a round-robin group stage. Based on the results, the top teams continued to compete for the gold medals in the final round.

Dmytro Mykhasiuk, Shakhtar Stalevi defender:

– I’m very satisfied with the tournament! We prepared thoroughly for a long time, and I believe the team showed character. The atmosphere was incredibly pleasant, with simply amazing support from the fans. We will do everything possible to please them with our play. It is clear that the team have made noticeable progress compared to the Winter Cup. Such competitions greatly contribute to socialisation as they are not just about sport but also about providing a space where one can feel support and emotionally unwind.

Shakhtar Stalevi started their journey in the Super League and earned the maximum number of points on the first matchday, defeating MSK Dnipro (1-0) and Burevii (2-1). On the second day, the Orange-and-Blacks began with a draw against Pokrova AMP-2 (0-0) and finished the group stage with a defeat to Pokrova AMP (0-5). As a result of this stage, the Pitmen advanced to the final, where they once again faced Pokrova AMP and lost in the battle for the gold medals (0-3).

Bohdan Bilko, Shakhtar Stalevi head coach:

– There was tension from the very first minute of the tournament, with the teams playing toe-to-toe. It was very difficult, but the players followed all instructions and tried to show the best possible result. Overall, the lads demonstrated competitive football and imposed a fight on all opponents. It was evident that everyone had high motivation and made significant progress. Such competitions are important both from a sporting and a social perspective as participants set an example for those who may potentially join the teams and create an invaluable community. The most important thing is that we said at the previous competition that Shakhtar Stalevi would compete in the final stage and we stood by our words.

The League of the Mighty project was created to involve people with amputated limbs in football. Its main goal is to support soldiers and assist their social and physical rehabilitation after severe injuries, particularly those sustained during the war.
