On May 14, Shakhtar and Dynamo met in the final match of the 2024/25 Ukrainian Cup

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for the decisive game of the season: Riznyk played between the sticks, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique acted as full-backs, Matviienko and Bondar appeared in the centre of defence, Bondarenko, Marlon Gomes and Sudakov played in midfield, Kevin and Pedrinho were the wingers, and Eguinaldo was the centre-forward.

An even game and a goal before the break

The teams started the match quite cautiously and were not in a hurry to force events, carefully preparing each attack. In the opening stages, the opponents exchanged two dangerous moments after crosses: first, Shakhtar defenders intercepted Vanat’s pass into the goal area, and then Bondarenko sharply passed from the right edge to the centre of the penalty area, but none of his teammates managed to turn it home. Later there was a lot of struggle, violations and pauses on the field, which is traditional for Ukrainian Clasico. The game became more active shortly before the break. First, the Orange-and-Blacks launcehd a beautiful attack, at the end of which Sudakov threw the ball into the penalty area, Marlon Gomes made a chest pass to Kevin, but the Brazilian was prevented from scoring by the defenders of the Kyiv-based team. And in the 43rd minute, Dynamo responded with their own sharp attack and were able to open the scoring: Dubinchak shot from the left wing into the centre of the penalty area, where Yarmolenko hit the bottom right corner with a volley.

Pusic’s jokers worked: Kaua Elias scored after Alisson’s pass

Shakhtar made a substitution at half-time, and Kaua Elias replaced Eguinaldo. The Miners started the second half more actively and dominated on the ball in the first minutes, but without much intensity. In the 53rd minute, there was first drama in the derby: Marlon Gomes and Vanat from the Kyiv-based team started pushing, for which they each received a yellow card. Meanwhile, Marino Pusic made three more changes in the line-up, releasing Nazaryna, Kryskiv and Alisson. And the substitutions quickly paid off: in the 64th minute, an interception in the opponent’s half of the field resulted in a quick attack, Sudakov found Alisson on the right, the latter crossed well at the far post, and another newcomer of the Pitmen, Kaua Elias, turned it home with a one-touch shot – 1-1. This goal inspired the Orange-and-Blacks, who continued to move forward. And immediately Sudakov had a great opportunity, when he shot powerfully from outside the penalty area into the left top corner, but Neshcheret reacted and saved the Kyiv-based team from a second goal. Then Matviienko had a chance, heading proactively after a cross from a set piece – near the crossbar. After this, Kryskiv took advantage of the opponent’s mistake, intercepted a pass in the penalty area, but the goalkeeper threw himself at his feet. The Pitmen could have snatched a victory in the last of the three added minutes: again Alisson intricately cut a cross from the right flank to the far post, but this time Kaua Elias was centimetres away from putting the ball into the net. Therefore, 1-1 – a draw in regular time.

No goals in extra time and a decisive penalty shootout

In the first extra-time half, Shakhtar players, especially Alisson, were more proactive. The young Brazilian winger tried to intensify the situation on his right flank all the time, put several promising crosses to the penalty area and shots. And in the end, he created almost the only dangerous episode, when Alisson’s cross was almost cut into his own goal by Myhavko. The second extra-time half passed at a slow pace and with a lot of pauses due to injuries and fouls, and there were almost no chances near the goal of both teams. The Pitmen launched a sharp attack only in the last seconds: Kaua Elias’ shot was blocked by the defenders, and another cross from Alisson was intercepted by the goalkeeper.

So the turning point of the final was a penalty shootout. Both teams very confidently converted the first five attempts. Nazaryna, Alisson, Kevin, Kaua Elias and Ghram scored for the Pitmen, while Vanat, Brazhko, Pikhalonok, Vivcharenko, Mykhailenko scored for the Kyiv-based team. The sixth shots were decisive: Kryskiv scored from the left post, and Dmytro Riznyk saved the shot from Dynamo player Karavaiev in the right corner.

7-6 – Shakhtar defeated Dynamo in the final and became the winners of the Ukrainian Cup for the 15th time in their history!
