Comment from Shakhtar women’s team head coach Roman Zaiev after the defeat in the Ukrainian Cup semi-final match against Polissia
– In order to solve the tasks immediately and as required, you certainly need performers with the appropriate level of qualification. We can say that we have players with the necessary experience and qualities, but these components must be translated into the final outcome. Unfortunately, this has been difficult both in the previous league match against Polissia and today in the Ukrainian Cup. We are making mistakes that players of real quality should not be making. After that, the team have to correct those mistakes through hard work, expending significant physical energy to bring the game back under control. This affects the overall nature of our play and the psychological state of the team. As a result, the match becomes disjointed. Of course, we are creating chances – those are there. But there are questions about our finishing actions. It is difficult to say anything definitive immediately after the match, but in the moments where we should have settled it, some very illogical decisions were made. As for the match itself: we had the territorial advantage and the better of the play, we created more chances. After the opponents’ sending-off, we needed to calm down and act more steadily. Even before the game, we stressed that we had to control it psychologically above all, yet the goals we conceded affect our mindset and agitate the team as a whole. As a result, in the chances we created, we were a centimetre or a second short of turning them into goals. Regarding the penalty shootout: we always identify the group of players who feel confident on the pitch. We understood that today the most experienced ones were Holovach and Chaika, and it was hard to imagine that they would be the ones unable to convert their attempts. We should have finished this match in normal time, but unfortunately…
– A two-week league break now awaits, after which the team will play the final matches of the year. What can you say about the immediate plans and preparation for the next fixtures?
– Even before the cup match we had our schedule planned and the team will have four days off. On Monday, we will begin preparing for the away matches against Vorskla and Seasters. These are difficult opponents with ambitious aims who will be fully focused on taking the maximum points playing at home. We will prepare for these matches and adjust the girls accordingly, as there is no other way.
