Shakhtar faced Irish champions Shamrock Rovers away on the UEFA Conference League MD4

Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan picked the following starting line-up for this match: Fesiun took the place between the sticks, Vinicius Tobias and Azarov appeared as fullbacks, Matviienko and Bondar operated at centre-back, Nazaryna, Isaque and Kryskiv (who made his 100th appearance for Shakhtar) formed the midfield, Lucas and Newertton acted as wingers, with Kaua Elias performing as a centre forward.

Advantage converted into Kaua Elias’ goal

Both teams started the match at a fairly high tempo and played as directly as possible: the ball rarely stayed in midfield and was constantly near the penalty areas. The Orange-and-Blacks tried to break down the hosts’ defence with quick combinations, but lacked the final touch, while the Irish side traditionally caused tension around the goal from set pieces. Gradually, however, the Pitmen’s superiority became clear as they created several dangerous chances in succession. Newerton threaded a pass to Kaua Elias at the corner of the goal area, but the forward’s shot, contested by defenders, was saved by the goalkeeper. Soon after, Kaua Elias delivered a neat cross into the centre of the penalty area for Kryskiv, but a wall of several Dublin players on the goal line blocked both Dmytro’s shot and Isaque’s follow-up. Shakhtar finally opened the scoring in the 23rd minute: Vinicius Tobias played a one-two with Kryskiv and, after receiving a backheel pass from the Ukrainian, drove into the penalty area and rolled the ball into the centre, from where Kaua Elias shot it first-time into the net – 0-1. After the goal, the game calmed slightly, but the Irish side had a chance to equalise at the end of the half: McGovern first headed just wide of the right post, and then shot at Fesiun following a wide cross, only for Bondar to block the ball.

Mutual attacks and Nazaryna’s winning goal

The second half began with chances at the away goal: Grant lobbed the ball over the Pitmen’s goalkeeper, but Bondar saved again, and Heally shot at the far corner following a corner routine, only for Fesiun to deal with it securely. The Miners responded with their own opportunity when Azarov’s cross from the left was met by Kaua Elias’ header – straight into Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper’s hands. Overall, the Ukrainians again controlled possession more, forcing their opponents to focus on defence, but they did not rush, waiting for the right moment. In the 74th minute, Arda Turan made a triple substitution, bringing on Pedro Enrique, Bondarenko, and Ocheretko. Then, in the 77th minute, the Orange-and-Blacks doubled their lead: Kaua Elias won a free kick slightly left of centre, with Yehor Nazaryna firing a powerful shot through the wall and past the goalkeeper – 0-2. Riding the wave of their goal, the visitors created several more chances. Newerton attempted a backheel from the corner of the goal area – McGinty made the save. Nazaryna struck the ball powerfully again following a corner routine, but the home side were saved by the post. In the 80th minute, Shakhtar even thought they had scored when Kaua Elias redirected a left-corner delivery into the right post, with the ball crossing the line, but the referee disallowed the goal after a VAR review due to Matviienko being offside. Against this backdrop, an unexpected goal came for the Irish side in the 87th minute: Malley burst into the box from the right flank and chipped Fesiun, reducing the deficit. However, the Miners were not allowed to complete a comeback, as their opponents calmly held on until the final whistle.

2-1 – Shakhtar defeat Shamrock Rovers and enter the top five of the UEFA Conference League league phase with 9 points.

Arda Turan’s team will play their next European match against Maltese side Hamrun Spartans away on December 11 (kickoff is at 22:00 Kyiv time).

And already this coming Monday, December 1, the Miners will play their next Ukrainian Premier League match. The Orange-and-Blacks will host Kryvbas in round 14. The clash at the Arena Lviv kicks off at 18:00.
