Shakhtar hosted LNZ in the UPL round 8 in Lviv
Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan selected the following line-up for this match: Riznyk started in goal, Matviienko and Bondar played as central defenders, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique operated on the flanks, Marlon Gomes, Ocheretko and Bondarenko were in midfield, Pedrinho and Isaque featured as wingers, with Meirelles leading the line as centre-forward.
The first symbolic kick was taken by veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ihor Fedusov, a soldier of the 17th Separate Kryvyi Rih Tank Brigade named after Kostiantyn Pestushko. From the first days of the full-scale invasion, he defended Ukraine, protecting Mariupol alongside his brothers-in-arms. He was captured by Russian forces in April 2022 and spent 2 years and 10 months in captivity. Before joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ihor worked as a miner.
First half: few chances and a conceded goal
From the opening minutes, the Orange-and-Blacks tried to establish possession and positional play but faced aggressive pressing from the visitors. It was after an interception in their own half that the Cherkasy side managed to open the scoring in the 14th minute: Jashari and Prosper launched a counterattack down the right flank, which Kuzyk finished with an accurate strike from outside the box into the far corner. Throughout the half, the hosts tried to find ways through to the opponents’ goal, but LNZ players, packing their defence, acted flawlessly. The Miners’ best chance to equalise came in stoppage time, when after a left-corner delivery Meirelles struck on the volley from about 8 metres, but the goalkeeper reacted well and saved the Cherkasy side.
Nazaryna’s stunning goal, but the result favour the opponents
From the start of the second half, Arda Turan’s side pushed forward in numbers in search of scoring opportunities, but the opponents responded with dangerous counterattacks. While Riznyk managed to deal with Jashari’s difficult shot under the crossbar, in the 61st minute no one could stop Assinor, who finished a teammate’s pass from the centre of the penalty area to score the second goal. Shakhtar coaching staff tried to turn the game around with substitutions, bringing on Azarov, Lucas, Newertton and Kaua Elias. Meirelles immediately had a chance to reduce the deficit, heading in a cross from Konoplia, but Palamarchuk once again saved the Brazilian’s effort. While the Orange-and-Blacks struggled to create chances, LNZ converted nearly all of theirs and scored a third goal in the 71st minute: Pasich’s shot was blocked, but Riabov reacted well to the rebound at the edge of the penalty area. Despite the scoreline, the Pitmen kept trying to fight back: Pedrinho’s long-range shot flew over the goal, Konoplia’s flank cross was intercepted by the visiting goalkeeper and Kaua Elias fired from a tight angle but struck the outside of the net. However, the Miners finally scored in the 85th minute: Yehor Nazaryna, who had come on a few minutes earlier, took a free kick from slightly right of centre and fired a powerful shot into the near top corner – 1-3. The final word, though, belonged to the Cherkasy-based side: Prosper set the final score in the 89th minute. 1-4 – Shakhtar lost to LNZ.
Club football now enters a two-week break for international matches. The Miners will play the next UPL match against Polissia away on October 18.
