Shakhtar played against Metalist 1925 away on the UPL MD5
Manager of the Orange-and-Blacks Arda Turan fielded the following starting line-up for this clash: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Matviienko and Bondar acted at centre-back, Vinicius Tobias and Azarov appeared as fullbacks, Marlon Gomes, Ocheretko and Bondarenko formed the midfield, Alisson and Pedrinho were deployed as wingers, with Kaua Elias leading the line.
Play advantage converted into Bondarenko’s goal
The Miners laid siege to the opposing penalty area almost from the first minutes, trying to break down the Kharkiv defence with a variety of combinations. However, numerous crosses were cleared by the rivals and shots from Pedrinho and Alisson were blocked. The hosts responded with two sharp counterattacks, but neither Martyniuk nor Kalitvintsev could hit the target. Still, in the 22nd minute, the Pitmen managed to open the scoring: Alisson entered the penalty area on the right flank, controlled the ball and was fouled by Martyniuk; Artem Bondarenko converted the penalty under the right post, making it 0-1. Closer to halftime, the Yellow-and-Blues became more active, but they created only one real chance, when Kaliuzhnyi’s long-range strike was saved by Riznyk.
A tough half and another controversial goal for the opponents
After the match resumed, Riznyk came to the rescue once again – this time after a shot from Peter. Shortly after, Kharkiv’s Rashytsia almost curled the ball into the far corner from the left edge of the penalty area. Midway through the half, Arda Turan refreshed the team with substitutions, bringing on Kryskiv and Newertton. A little later, Konoplia also entered the game (instead of Azarov, who had picked up an injury). Shakhtar footballers continued to control the game, not allowing the opponents many dangerous chances, and had opportunities to extend the lead themselves, but Pedrinho’s shot from the semi-circle went over the crossbar. However, in the 85th minute, the Kharkiv side managed to equalise: after a corner from the left flank, Kaliuzhnyi met the rebound at the far post and slotted the ball into the net. Moreover, another Metalist 1925 player was standing directly in front of Riznyk, obstructing the goalkeeper, but after a VAR review, the goal was allowed. The Orange-and-Blacks tried to mount a final assault, but there was not enough time to snatch a victory. 1-1 draw.
On Wednesday, September 17, Arda Turan’s team will begin their Ukrainian Cup campaign: the Miners will face amateur side Polissia Stavky (Kyiv Oblast) in the Round of 32. The match will take place at the Temp Stadium in Kyiv, with kickoff scheduled for 15:30.
