Shakhtar faced Rukh away on the UPL MD7

Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Arda Turan fielded the following starting line-up: Riznyk took his place between the sticks, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique appeared as full-backs, Matviienko and Bondar operated in central defence, Marlon Gomes, Kryskiv and Isaque played in midfield, while the attacking trio consisted of Bondarenko, Pedrinho and Meirelles.

Ukrainians assisted, Brazilians scored

Shakhtar started the match strongly and could have scored on their very first attack: after a long pass from Riznyk, the hosts’ defender flicked the ball to Meirelles, but his shot was saved by Hereta. Shortly after, the young striker of the Pitmen nearly connected with Pedro Henrique’s cross at the far post – just missed. A little later, the Lviv side were saved by the post when Kholod sliced the ball after a Pedrinho cross. The opening goal came in the 27th minute: Matviienko delivered a brilliant diagonal to Bondarenko on the right side of the penalty area, who headed it down to Luca Meirelles, who handled the ball with his chest and shot into the near corner – 0-1. Shakhtar didn’t ease off the pressure and doubled their lead in the 31st minute: Marlon Gomes played the ball into the box to Konoplia, Yukhym rolled it along the goal line, and Pedrinho finished into an empty net, making it 0-2.

Pedrinho scored a brace, Isaque sealed the win

Right at the start of the second half, Arda Turan’s men scored their third goal. After a corner near own goal, Matviienko won the ball, Pedro Henrique launched Pedrinho on a break with a powerful clearance, who Pedrinho ran at top speed from his own penalty area to the opponents’ and calmly beat the goalkeeper with a low shot – 0-3. Only after that did the hosts create their first chance of the match – Kvasnytsia’s long-ranger was saved by Riznyk. Midway through the half, Shakhtar coaching staff made a series of substitutions, bringing on Ocheretko, Shved, Nazaryna and Vinicius Tobias. The Miners continued to look sharper and created several more dangerous opportunities: Bondarenko shot from Konoplia’s pass – just centimetres wide of the post, Shved intercepted the ball in the opponents’ penalty area – but Hereta managed to stop his shot. The Orange-and-Blacks put the finishing touch in the 90th minute, when Isaque played one-two with Bondar on the left edge of the penalty area and struck accurately into the near corner.

4-0 – Shakhtar confidently defeated Rukh and take sole possession of the top spot in the UPL with 17 points.

Next week, Arda Turan’s side will begin their campaign in the UEFA Conference League league phase. On October 2 Shakhtar will face Aberdeen in Scotland. The game will take place at Pittodrie Stadium, with kickoff scheduled at 22:00 Kyiv time.
