Shakhtar hosted Rukh on the UPL MD22
Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan selected the following line-up for the match: Riznyk started in goal, Bondar and Marlon Santos played as central defenders, Konoplia and Azarov were deployed at full-back, Nazaryna, Bondarenko and Pedrinho were in midfield, Eguinaldo and Prosper featured as wingers, with Traore appearing as centre-forward.
The ceremonial kick-off was taken by war veteran Bohdan Molochko (call sign Pumba). At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he volunteered to fight for Ukraine and served as a grenadier in the fire support company of the 207th Battalion of the 241st Territorial Defence Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He defended the Kyiv and Donetsk regions, including Chasiv Yar and Siversk. While performing a combat mission, Bohdan sustained a severe injury, but did not break. Today, he continues his journey together with Shakhtar – as a player of the Shakhtar Stalevi amputee football team and a club employee.
A half of total dominance and a goal from Eguinaldo
From the opening minutes, the Orange-and-Blacks completely outplayed their opponents both in possession and in the number of created chances. The first opportunity fell to Prosper, who fired straight at the goalkeeper from the centre of the box. Shortly after, Pedrinho narrowly missed the left corner with a header, Bondar’s long-range effort went just inches wide of the post, and Eguinaldo was unable to beat Hereta after a pass from Bondarenko. However, in the 34th minute, it was this Ukrainian-Brazilian link that produced the opening goal: Konoplia found Bondarenko, who delivered a soft cross to the edge of the goal area, where Eguinaldo headed the ball into the net, making it 1-0.
Eguinaldo scored a brace, Meirelles put the finishing touch
At half-time, the Pitmen made a substitution: club captain Mykola Matviienko returned to the pitch after recovering from injury. At the very start of the second half, Prosper picked up an injury and was replaced by Isaque. The pattern of play remained unchanged: the Miners were in control and continued to create danger in front of the Lviv side’s goal. Nazaryna’s free-kick was tipped around the post by the goalkeeper, while Isaque struck the post after a pass from Konoplia. The hosts doubled their lead in the 62nd minute: Isaque played it to Traore, who laid it off into the centre of the box for Eguinaldo, who calmly placed the ball into the bottom-left corner – 2-0. Soon after, the creators of the goal were replaced by the young Brazilians Lucas and Meirelles, who added energy in attack. Lucas first had a chance to score but his shot from a tight angle was saved by Hereta. In the 88th minute, after receiving a pass from Bondarenko, the winger squared it across the face of goal for Luca Meirelles, who tapped it into an empty net – 3-0. In stoppage time, the hosts could have scored again: Isaque earned a penalty, but Pedrinho’s shot towards the left corner was saved by the goalkeeper.
3-0 – Shakhtar secured a confident win over Rukh in the UPL match.
On Thursday, April 9, the Miners will continue their European journey. Arda Turan’s side will play the first leg of the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals against AZ Alkmaar. The match will take place at the Henryk Reyman Municipal Stadium in Kraków (Poland), with kickoff scheduled for 22:00 Kyiv time. Tickets are on sale.
